Occupational Summary:
In consultation with, and reporting to, the Director of Engagement, the Manager of Campus Engagement oversees the development of Duke Arts’ artist residency programs, designing educational models to guide the Duke Arts engagement strategy on campus with a focus on faculty, creative research, and arts curriculum. The Manager will work very closely with Duke faculty as the primary liaison and for coordination with Duke Arts and will coordinate with Duke Arts programming, marketing, and development teammates to create of assets, archival documentation, and content to represent the campus engagement aspect of the organization’s work. The Manager of Campus Engagement will also assist the Director of Development with providing content to support the writing of grants to support the campus engagement strategy regarding arts faculty teaching, research, and project creation.
Work Performed:
Engagement (30%)
- Work with faculty to build and implement new curricular initiatives that deepen the arts experience for students, and enable faculty to participate in durable and robust curricular offerings to further engage substantial arts education experiences around Duke’s campus.
- Work with the Director of Engagement to develop and support residency programs that connect the Duke campus with the broader Durham and local arts communities, including the development of effective models for engagement with K-12 and partner higher education institutions.
- Assist with the implementation of and management of new initiatives to further strengthen the alignment of the arts at Duke, including awards for excellence and proposals for artistic research funding, and the integration of education and community outreach strategies.
Programming (25%)
- Working closely with the Duke Arts Programming team, contribute to a robust, creative, and multi-faceted strategy for engagement across campus.
- Represent Duke Arts in planning artist residencies in collaboration with faculty and constituents from across the institution, and lead efforts to inspire faculty to think creatively and encouraging them to incorporate residencies into their regular course planning.
- Solicit faculty and staff feedback regarding which artists might best serve their pedagogical goals and devise residency activities that challenge visiting artists, students, and faculty to engage in discipline-crossing conversations.
- Support the Artist Service Coordinator regarding visiting artist residency events that interface with internal and external educational sectors (such Duke departments and Schools, Durham schools and other community arts education institutions).
- Serve as point person within Duke Arts for arts practice faculty proposals regarding creative research and new work development.
Marketing/Communication (20%)
- Write and assist the Marketing team with the creation of copy for residency events.
- Represent Duke Arts at residency and public-facing events, which could include introducing artists and moderators before conversations and performances.
- Work with Duke faculty, staff, and contractors to produce a range of ancillary materials (print and digital) that contextualize major residencies and premieres of commissioned projects.
- Support artistic contractors in the development of residency documentation. Provide editorial feedback throughout process and ensure timely completion of work, in consultation with the Director and the marketing team.
Development (20%)
- Assist the Director of Development and Development Officer in the preparation of grant proposals and reports by providing research, writing, evaluation, and measurement functions, targeting foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other institutional donors and prospects to secure funding in support of faculty research and innovation and larger vertical integration of engagement across student, faculty, and community sectors.
- Prepare copy and visual assets for development use in letters of inquiry, proposals, grant applications and funder reports, ensuring that all data is completed accurately and on time.
- Develop and maintain tracking and reporting system for grant awards, submittals and prospects related to data collection (qualitative and quantitative) regarding campus engagement events and innovations and summative reports of past/present events.
- Partner with development colleagues to support storytelling by writing and collecting visual assets to convey donor impact.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Preferred Education/Training:
Work requires a general liberal arts background equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in an arts or humanities field.
Preferred Experience:
4-6 years related experience at a large arts organization in administrative work or a higher-level degree (M.F.A. or Ph.D.) in an arts or humanities field.
Fluency of research or production knowledge across a broad range of arts genres, interdisciplinary educational fields, and innovative artist residency work taking place at peer institutions.
Demonstrated disciplinary and interdisciplinary project management within an institute of higher education or a large, non-profit arts organization.
Experience producing written materials for multiple audiences (i.e., academic institutions, granting agencies, K-12 educational sectors, general public).
Anticipated Pay Range:
Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $58,656 to USD $85,000. Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline
Experience
Work requires two years of directly related writing experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
