Occupational Summary

The Maintenance Technician - Parking is responsible for performing a wide variety of duties to support the upkeep and visual appearance of all garages and surface lots as well as helping to maintain operational efficiency of the University's Parking Access and Revenue Control System (PARCS). Primary duties include cleaning and maintaining parking facilities and repairing electronic, electromechanical and mechanical equipment and devices related to parking, access control, and revenue control; performing routine preventive maintenance and servicing of parking control devices; coordinating maintenance and repair work by contractors, and monitoring use of, maintaining, and reporting the condition of parking areas.

 

Work Performed

  • Facility Maintenance: Perform the maintenance and repair of parking facilities to include the painting of signs, painting of lines, arrows, signs, curbs, streets and crosswalks, and asphalt patching and repair, install and/or remove traffic and parking signs as needed; order signs and replacement parts as needed. Maintain visual appearance by removing debris with blowers and/or pressure washers.
  • Perform minor landscaping, drain cleaning, and drainage maintenance duties as needed. Coordinate contractor maintenance and repairs of parking lots, facilities, landscaping, and tree trimming.
  • Hardware Maintenance: Check and replace as needed ticket rolls at gates and pay-on-foot machines. Clear ticket jams and other error codes from machinery ensuring operational efficiency. Replace broken or damaged gate arms as needed.
  • Support Parking Systems Technicians in the repair and maintenance of electronic parking control systems and devices. Develop basic diagnostic and troubleshooting skills and take technical training courses provided by manufacturer or other providers.
  • Develop basic understanding of low voltage electrical theory, systems and electronic devices and apply knowledge towards repair of PARCS' devices. Develop basic understanding and skills of programming and reporting functions associated with support and utilization of PARCS systems.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine preventative maintenance duties including cleaning of equipment, calibrating, replacing electronic/electrical/mechanical modules and other maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer or determined by experience.
  • Supplemental Responsibilities: Remove coins from parking pay devices, as scheduled; and transport money to and from various offices and payment locations.
  • Monitor and perform lot counts in various parking locations.
  • Observe and report parking violations to enforcement department.
  • Assist with placement of signs, cones, barricades, and other traffic/pedestrian control devices and assist event staff as needed. Collect parking fees and direct traffic during special events, as needed.
  • Provide regular and detailed reporting to management, to include services performed, outages and resolution of same, recommendations for repairs and replacements, and trending of mean-time-between-failures (MTBF) of equipment and systems.
  • A willingness to make a difference and positive attitude are a must.
  • Perform other parking and maintenance related duties as assigned by leadership.
  • Have availability to work occasional off-shift athletic and university special events in addition to programs during high demand times.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communication and analytical skills normally acquired through a high school education.

A two-year technical college degree in electrical engineering is preferred. 


Experience:

Work requires the ability to perform routine maintenance and repair of parking equipment, coordinate maintenance and repair of parking facilities with contractors, and related maintenance and support activities generally acquired through three (3) years of related experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Valid NC Driver's license required.

 


Skills:

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Strong communication and customer service skills.
