Perform high-level technical tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of critical sterile processing equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, steam sterilizers (autoclaves), tunnel washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and automated endoscope reprocessors (AERs). Ensure all equipment meets stringent patient safety and infection control standards.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES

 

  • Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology (BMET), Mechanical Engineering, or Electromechanical Engineering.
  • Specific OEM training certifications (e.g., STERIS, Getinge, Belimed) are highly desirable.
  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/Training - High school diploma or equivalent with course work in skilled crafts required.

 

Experience - Minimum of four (4) years of maintenance and repair experience. At least one year must be specific to hospital sterile processing equipment or high-pressure steam systems.

 

A valid N.C. Driver's License is required.

Skills

 

  • Advanced proficiency with multimeters, oscilloscopes, and pressure gauges.
  • Requires a strong mechanical and electrical skillset with the ability to read line diagrams
  • Strong communication skills to interface with surgical leadership and regulatory auditors.
  • Physical: Ability to stand for long periods, work in high-heat environments (mechanical rooms), and lift/move equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability: Must participate in a rotating on-call schedule and work non-standard hours (nights/weekends) for emergency repairs.

 

Work Performed

 

  • Troubleshooting & Repair: Execute advanced diagnostic and repair tasks on specialized medical equipment by interpreting complex blueprints, manufacturer schematics, and digital diagnostic software.
    • System Maintenance: Perform inspections and repairs on dedicated steam, plumbing, and electrical systems. Monitor and maintain water quality systems (Reverse Osmosis/Deionization) to ensure compliance with AAMI ST108 standards for critical water.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all maintenance activities align with AAMI ST79 (Steam Sterilization), The Joint Commission (TJC), and OSHA regulations.
  • Digital Documentation: Utilize a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document all work orders, preventive maintenance (PM) completion, and parts inventory. Maintain detailed "ready-for-audit" logs for sterilization cycle validation.
  • Equipment Validation: Perform and document periodic safety and performance testing, including pressure vessel inspections and calibration of temperature/pressure sensors.
  • Technical Consultation: Act as a subject matter expert for the Sterile Processing Department (SPD); advise management on equipment lifecycle, adverse trends, and budget requirements for upgrades.
  • Vendor Liaison: Coordinate with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for warranty service and complex software updates; oversee third-party contractors to ensure compliance with hospital safety protocols.
  • Instruction: Provide technical guidance and "in-service" training to clinical staff regarding the proper mechanical operation and daily care of equipment.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $23.58 to USD $38.97.
