Occupational Summary
 
On site position
Require minimal weekend hours as needed
 
Under the direction of the Director of Horticulture, manage the documentation of the plant records system (BG BASE) through data entry, accessioning, deaccessioning and mapping. Oversee and coordinate the operation of the nursery and greenhouse facility to support plant propagation, new plant introductions, teaching, and outreach goals at Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
 
Work Performed
 
Manage the plant records systems through the use of BG Base software. Maintain accurate documentation of plant material through data entry and GIS mapping.
 
Conduct taxonomic verifications in the existing database to ensure current validity of specimens.
 
Assign identification tags to new accessions and maintain existing accession tags on displayed material. Oversee the production and distribution of display plant labels; maintain system of existing labels in garden.
 
Collaborate with website engineers to maintain public accessibility to the collections database via the garden's website. Supervise, coordinate, and participate in management of plant material in the nursery and greenhouse facilities, overseeing and maintaining irrigation, fertilization, pest management, electrical systems, timing systems, cooling systems, propagation, and production schedules of plant material.
 
Participate in the production and care of plant material used for interpretation, research, and ornamental purposes at Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
 
Procure and propagate plant material to be sold at semi annual plant sales.
 
Actively participate in pest management in the greenhouses and nursery using IPM strategies.
 
Conduct tours of the greenhouses and give instruction through organized educational classes in areas of specialized horticultural interest.
 
Attend horticultural and botanical meetings, conventions, and seminars.
 
Maintain professional affiliations with organizations such as; North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC) and International Plant Propagators Society (IPPS).
 
Prepare budgetary recommendations; maintain supply inventories and operational records.

Required Qualifications at this Level
 
Education/Training: Work requires knowledge of plant materials and care acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in horticulture, agronomy, botany or a related field.
 
Experience: Work requires minimum one year of experience in horticulture or a related field. Greenhouse / nursery management experience is preferred. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Work requires knowledge of plant materials and care acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in horticulture, agronomy, botany or arelated field.

 

Experience

 

Work requires minimum one year of experience in horticulture or a OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE related field. Greenhouse / nursery management experience is preferred.

 

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

 

Must possess North Carolina's drivers license or equivalent Must possess North Carolina's pesticide applicators license
