Position Description

The Teaching & Learning Intern provides support for teaching and learning initiatives in the Duke University Libraries (DUL) and works with staff across the Libraries to help reimagine teaching and learning programs to support undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty instructors. The intern will gain classroom and project management experience, learn about teaching innovations to support the intellectual growth of a wide variety of learners, and develop professional skills and competencies relevant to the field of teaching, critical thinking, and program development.

 

This internship offers a student the opportunity to experience the full range of Teaching & Learning activities. While these activities may be of particular interest to students pursuing a career in public services, these skills also benefit individuals looking for other kinds of careers in libraries, from outreach to technology positions.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in teaching and learning activities across the Libraries (e.g., with staff in Research and Public Services, Rubenstein Library, ScholarWorks, and Center for Data and Visualization Sciences) to help create lesson plans, learning outcomes, learning modules, or research guides for specific courses, programs, or initiatives.
  • Investigates the implications of generative AI for undergraduate learning and research behaviors and recommends strategies for integrating best practices into library instruction.
  • Assesses current offerings and recommends instructional workshops to increase outreach to graduate students and early career research fellows.
  • Assists subject librarians with library instruction that aligns with the new undergraduate curriculum (starting in fall 2025), supports student success, and fosters critical thinking skills.
  • Integrates resources and authors that reflect diverse backgrounds into Writing 120 instruction to encourage learners to identify, evaluate, and apply different points of view.
  • Designs and helps implement outreach connected to the QuadEx residential program and the reopening of the Lilly Library (currently planned for fall 2026).
  • Promotes teaching and learning services through special programs, blog posts, and other forms of outreach.
  • Supports Research and Public Services operations and special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Participates in the Libraries’ teaching and learning initiatives to improve teaching, research, and project management skills.
  • Practices critical pedagogy skills in Writing 120 instruction to demonstrate liberatory and anti-oppressive teaching methods.
  • Participates in DUL events and meetings to build personal cultural competences, anti-racist attitudes, and teaching and learning skills, and contributes to and enhances teaching and learning at Duke University Libraries and the profession at large.
  • Assesses new initiatives developed by staff in DUL’s teaching and learning program to increase teaching competencies that promote student success.
  • Analyzes emerging technologies and recommends how to best integrate them into teaching and learning activities in order to stay abreast of new tools and how they can be used ethically and equitably in research and teaching.

Education

Required: A successful applicant must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in or be a recent graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.

Experience

Required: Demonstrated interest in or past experience with teaching in an academic environment; desire to work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and library staff; good communication and presentation skills; flexibility; demonstrated ability to take initiative and work in a team environment; interest in working with diverse groups; and a strong public service orientation.

 

Preferred: Experience working with underrepresented or diverse student groups.

 

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment
  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.
  • Occasionally moves library materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Much of the work of the internship will occur on-campus but remote work may be possible, subject to the specific prioritized projects.

Hiring Rate

Duke is committed to transparency by posting the full salary range for all positions. However, Duke Libraries has established a specific hiring rate for this role, which is set at $18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 9:00-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The Intern will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries and this appointment is from August 2025-May 2026.
