Position Summary                                              

Under the supervision of the Director of the Sallie Bingham Center, and working closely with the Bingham Center Technical Services Librarian, this position will provide support for technical service activities of the Bingham Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provides reference services for Center users, including those who visit in person and those Assists with collections intake by establishing initial physical and intellectual control of incoming manuscript materials through arranging and rehousing this material, creating records in Archivists’ Toolkit, and other activities.
  • Assists with processing of archival and manuscript collections and assists with analyzing their organization, arrangement and preservation needs.
  • Prepares descriptive tools for collections including finding aids and catalog records.
  • Assists with the processing of print materials as needed.
  • Assists librarians with special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Required: BA/BS and current enrollment in a Public History or MLS program accredited by the American Library Association, or equivalent.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Required:  Strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; interest in women’s history; capacity to take initiative and thrive in a rapidly changing environment; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; accurate and detail-oriented; ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services.  

 

Preferred:  Prior experience in a special collections setting and/or completion of at least one course in archival theory and practice; academic or activist background in women’s studies or women’s history.

 

Working Conditions

  • Occasionally moves library materials weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Normal office environment
  • Work will be onsite, so candidates should live in proximity to the Triangle Area

Hiring Rate

Duke is committed to transparency by posting the full salary range for all positions. However, Duke Libraries has established a specific hiring rate for this role, which is set at $18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 9:00-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The Intern will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries and this appointment is from August 2025-May 2026.
