Position Summary
The University Archives (UA) Intern for Student Engagement will assist the Assistant University Archivist with outreach to student groups in support of the department’s efforts to collect and document student life on campus. A focus will be given to records of student populations that are currently underrepresented in the University Archives to ensure a more complete history of the university.

Responsibilities
- Collaborates with Assistant University Archivist on student group collecting, including but not limited to: workshops, social media and blog posts, exhibits, and other types of outreach to educate students on UA’s student-collecting initiative
- Answers reference questions from students, faculty/staff, alumna, and non-Duke affiliated community related to undergraduate and graduate student groups, Greek life, and other types of student-led activities
- Occasionally works in the Rubenstein Reading Room
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:
Required: BA/BS in liberal arts or social science fields and current enrollment or recent graduate of archival studies, public history, or information and library science programs, or equivalent.
Preferred: Current enrollment in a related graduate program combined with archival experience or training.
Experience:
Required: N/A
Preferred: Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; strong project and time-management skills; interest in institutional archives; demonstrated experience with collaborative projects; excellent organizational skills; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services; prior experience working in a special collections setting and/or completion of at least one course in archival theory; comparable work experience in an archival setting.
Working Conditions
- Routinely/Occassionally moves library materials weighing up 40 pounds
- Normal office environment
- May work occasional evenings
- Routinely works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
- Work will be onsite, so candidates should live in proximity to the Triangle Area

Hiring Rate
Duke is committed to transparency by posting the full salary range for all positions. However, Duke Libraries has established a specific hiring rate for this role, which is set at $18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.
Hours
This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 19 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 9:00-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The Access Services Intern will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries and this appointment is from August 2025-May 2026.
