Position Summary
The Duke Family Processing and Digitization intern will rehouse, arrange, and describe archival collections related to Duke family history and possibly remediate or enhance existing description. They will also digitize, perform quality control of digital files, and participate in the process of creating and sustaining digital collections. This internship will provide a unique opportunity to engage with a variety of collections as they move through their analog to digital lifecycle and offer excellent hands-on experience for candidates seeking a career in archival processing and/or cultural heritage digitization or digital collections.

Responsibilities
- Assists with establishing physical and intellectual control of manuscript materials through arranging and rehousing personal papers.
- Under guidance, performs processing of archival collections and analyzes their organization, arrangement, and preservation needs. Creates and updates description according to Rubenstein Library’s inclusive description guidelines.
- Prepares materials for digitization.
- Creates digital captures using scanning equipment in the Digital Production Center.
- Evaluates digital captures for quality control.
- Finalizes files for ingest into the Duke Digital Repository.
- Assists the Digital Collections Implementation Team in digital collections related work as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Learning Objectives
- Hands-on experience arranging and describing archival collections.
- Strategies for evaluating archival collection housing and basic preventative conservation techniques.
- Ability to identify and articulate potential priorities and successful descriptive outcomes when creating or editing library description.
- Develop familiarity with current library descriptive standards and platforms, including inclusive description practices.
- Experience working on special collections projects and teams.
- Become conversant in cultural heritage digitization practices.
- Safe handling of fragile and one-of-a-kind items.
- Learn to operate a variety of professional digitization equipment.
- Exposure to digital preservation implementation and digitization workflows.

Education:
Required: Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree and be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.
Experience:
Required: Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently (after training) and as a member of a team; accurate and detail-oriented; comfort and familiarity with Excel, Box, and Teams; and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
Preferred: Demonstrated interest in archival work in general; experience or coursework with archival processing and/or digitization; strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills.
Working Conditions
- Occasionally moves library materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.
- Frequently exposed to camera and scanner lights.
- Constantly positions self to process materials.
- Normal office environment.
- Work will be onsite, so candidates should live in proximity to the Triangle Area

Hiring Rate
Duke is committed to transparency by posting the full salary range for all positions. However, Duke Libraries has established a specific hiring rate for this role, which is set at $18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.
Hours
This internship is a temporary, part-time, fully on-site position available for up to 19 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 9:00-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. The fall semester will be spent in Smith Warehouse, while the spring semester will be spent in the Digital Production Center on Duke’s West Campus.
