As a Lifeguard, you will be entrusted with maintaining a safe aquatic environment by actively monitoring pool activities, responding to emergencies, and promoting safe behaviors. Your quick decision-making skills, dedication to public safety, and commitment to providing exceptional service will contribute directly to the well-being of everyone in our recreation facilities.

What You'll Do:

  • Continuously monitor pool areas, swimmers, and aquatic activities to ensure participant safety.
  • Enforce pool rules and promote safe swimming practices among all facility users.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to aquatic emergencies, performing rescues and administering first aid, CPR, or rescue breathing as required.
  • Oversee open swim sessions and maintain constant vigilance of participant activity.
  • Inspect pool facilities and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness, safety, and usability.
  • Report maintenance concerns, hazards, or facility issues to the Center Director or appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive, welcoming, and customer-focused environment.
  • Complete additional duties related to aquatic operations and facility support as assigned.

What You'll Bring:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and act decisively in emergency situations.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Knowledge of lifeguarding principles, emergency response procedures, and aquatic safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with facility staff.

Required Certification:

  • Current Lifeguard Certification.
  • Current CPR and Rescue Breathing Certification (or ability to maintain certifications as required by Duke policies).

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $20.00 to USD $24.10. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
