Position Overview:
   
Implement technical activities of a scientific or research group in relation to the operation of specialized laboratories.  Acts as an advisor to subordinates to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems.  Develops assay budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.  Frequently interacts with other labs and coordinates the program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees.  Serve as an advisor to faculty and lab managers to meet schedules and or resolve technical problems. Insure Standard Operating Procedures, GCLP and protocols are maintained and applied.    

Minimum Requirements:

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

Work requires four years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Position Description:
 
Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Confer with principal investigator and Lab Manager in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.

Prepare and process specimens for complex immunological and virological procedures, including but not limited to PBMC Processing, Flow Cytometry, Cell Culture, SIV Viral Load, HIV Viral Load, EIA, Western Blot, and devise experimental techniques for testing and analysis as directed by laboratory manager.

Develop and implement laboratory policies and procedures.  Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures; coordinate with research staff on issues which impact laboratory functions.

Direct Whole Blood PBMC processing activities as they pertain to data gathering, Troubleshooting, and Training

Direct and coordinate the activities of a project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and laboratory resources required; coordinate and supervise the performance of routine and specialized technical procedures in the laboratory. 

Prepare technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Plan and conduct meetings with laboratory personnel to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards.

Represent the laboratory in interactions with other departments and institutions. 

Train lower level personnel and peers in research methodology.  Supervise the work of lower level employees engaged in the collection and tabulation of data.

Assure the laboratory technicians and analysts are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and equipment specific requirements.

Provide guidance as requested regarding hiring and training for technical personnel. Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures. 

Conduct a variety of complex and independent investigations in the planning, development and implementation of original experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of materials under experimentation.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829.00 to USD $96,509.00 Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate 's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
