Occ Summary 

Conduct a variety of complex and independent investigations in the planning, development and implementation of original experimental procedures within the overall scope of a research project at Duke University and well as serve as the research lab floor manager. 

 

Job Description: 

Duke Lab position focused on studying migraine pain in mouse models and analyzing human blood for biomarkers in clinical trials, is seeking a highly motivated Lab Analyst. The successful candidate will support cutting-edge research efforts aimed at understanding migraine mechanisms and identifying potential biomarkers for clinical applications. 

 

· Perform cellular and biochemical techniques to advance research goals related to migraine pain and biomarker identification. 

· Maintain and culture mammalian cells, ensuring sterile conditions and adherence to experimental protocols. 

· Conduct microscopy, including live and fixed cell imaging, for studying cellular mechanisms involved in migraine pain. 

· Execute immunoassays to detect and quantify specific biomarkers in human blood samples collected from various clinical trials. 

· Conduct in vivo mouse work, including pain behavior assessments, animal husbandry, and other relevant procedures in migraine pain models. 

· Perform tissue sectioning and staining for detailed analysis of histological samples, particularly related to migraine research. 

· Collaborate with researchers on both preclinical mouse model studies and human biomarker analysis. 

· Organize and analyze experimental data, prepare reports, and present findings within the lab and at relevant conferences. 

· Maintain meticulous records of all experiments, protocols, and results to ensure data integrity. 

· Contribute to the optimization of lab protocols and development of new methods to improve research outcomes. 

 

Job Duties: Neurology Bryan Research Building Floor manager 

· Manage Freezers – 10-11 department freezers. On call 24/7, call may be shared with Joh Ervin. To discuss with Ornit the potential of sharing back up responsibilities with other lab managers. If a freezer alarm goes off, responsible for transferring the samples in the freezer to one of the backup freezers using the proper methods for transferring. Assist other lab managers if freezer alarm goes off. Manage the maintenance of the freezers to ensure they are working. 

· Manage the liquid nitrogen. Change out tanks weekly, 2 of the four tanks are filled weekly, the other 2 tanks are filled based on order request. Note that will need to ensure order is delivered on Wednesday/Thursday if there is a Friday Holiday. Invoiced against standing PO 

· Manager Dry Ice – Dry ice arrives on Monday and Thursday based on preset amounts that you order. Ensure that dry ice is available 

· Building Maintenance: 

· Submit E&O request for broken doors, lights not working, etc. 

· Order Fume Inspections by E&O 

· Check and have the safety cabinets in tissue culture rooms checked and certified each year through Precision Instruments. 

· Surplus Computers and Equipment 

· Manage the maintenance agreement for: Centrifuge, incubators, speed vac, other neurology equipment 

· Lead contact for small Bryan Research Building renovations 

· Provide building access 

· Meet regularly with Division Chief of Translational Research 

 

Required Qualifications at this Level 

Education/Training 

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field. 

Experience 

Work requires four years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
