The Denny Lab at DHVI is recruiting for a Lab Research Analyst I to join our team.
The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) is a multi-disciplinary research organization at Duke University focused on basic, translational and clinical research to develop novel vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics for infectious diseases that impact global health.
Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in biology or other related scientific field. Work requires a minimum of two years of laboratory experience. Must be detail-oriented, well organized and approach procedures with critical thinking of the technical aspects with strong communication skills and ability to work in an interactive team environment.

Position Description:
Adhere to Laboratory(s) policies and procedures. Cooperate with various research staff on issues which impact laboratory services.
Work with various investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Advise on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.
Conduct a variety of investigations in the planning, development and implementation of experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of materials under experimentation.
Prepare and process specimens for complex immunological and virological procedures, also including elutriation and devise experimental techniques for testing and analysis as directed by laboratory manager.
Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses, monitor trends and make appropriate recommendations or conclusions
Maintain quality checks on safety of laboratories, including biohazards and insure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP).
Evaluate and recommend new techniques and technologies. Install and maintain laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.
Prepare technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Represent the department/laboratory in interactions with other departments.
Perform other laboratory duties as deemed necessary by laboratory management
Below are additional specifics and details on those duties:
- Conduct a variety of investigations in the planning, development and implementation experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of materials under experimentation.
- Collect information and data through observation, experimentation and various other methods to include operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment’s for HIV studies
- Prepare and process specimens for complex procedures, including PCR, Flow Cytometry, EIA, WB. Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Train others accordingly.
- Monitor inventory of received samples and reagents, recording site information, scheduling thawing schedule for samples, perform assay or process, summarize data, create reports, summarize findings for quarterly report.
- Maintain lab instrument related records, perform QC & QA, write up related SOP, implement and maintain GCLP, run samples, summary results, report results, etc. as directed by Lab Director.
- Support the lab repository sample management and record keeping system.
- Assist to maintain and order sufficient inventory of materials currently used laboratory, supplies and equipment for performance of relative assay including plastics ware, medias and specified instrument reagents and instrument QC samples.
- Assist in data management for designated protocols and studies.
- Developmental assays including, validation, verification, planning assay, performing new assays and collecting data as instructed.
- Write SOP’s and assists in grant and contract applications.
- Assist to set up lab equipment used in laboratory related assays. Assist with upkeep such as setup, temperature monitoring, daily verify w/QC, proficiency, operate, perform daily maintenance, troubleshooting, record keeping, etc as instructed.
- Implementing GCLP in lab. Assist to maintain GCLP on all work done such as following SOP’s, recording all data, results and dates on appropriate lab forms.
- Assist in training and instruct for in-house workshops, including assisting in workshop preparation, samples, presentations etc.
- Perform data summaries, procedural summaries; log keeping, assist in writing up for standard operating procedures, GCLP related policies, methodology, standards, recommendations and QA & QC.
- As directed, will interact with other laboratory sites to provide assistance, guidance and or assay summary.
- Assist in conference calls, and attend meetings and training sessions as needed.
- Conferring with PI and lab manager to review work assignments and develop plans for assay.
- Review lab methods, manuals abstracts and other literatures for information applicable to ongoing research experiments.
- Follows through and completes assignments as directed.
- Perform other duties as required

Anticipated Pay Range:
Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $51,448.00 to USD $77,945.00 Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate 's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
