LAB RESEARCH ANALYST I

Duke Human Vaccine Institute

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Perform all tasks associated with animal model studies of infectious disease inoculation, vaccination, and therapeutic intervention, such as challenging, dosing, collecting samples and precise harvesting and processing of tissues/biospecimens, in multiple species including, but not limited to, ferrets, hamsters, mice and rabbits. 
  • Follow appropriate ABSL2 and ABSL3 safety and standard operating procedures.  
  • Create labels and prepare specimen tubes for samples. 
    • Maintain freezer database for sample retrieval. 
  • Prepare samples for immunological and virological assays.
  • General laboratory maintenance including but not limited to: laboratory organization, preparation of solutions, waste processing, ordering/preparation/stocking of consumables and reagents, routine equipment calibration, maintenance of accurate sample and equipment inventories. 
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance performed by outside vendors. 
  • Serve as the representative for the RBL Animal Models Unit on the DHVI safety committee. 
  • Assist with the preparation of IACUC animal protocols and amendments.  
  • Perform monthly audits in compliance with the GHRB/RBL. 
  • Attend all required trainings and team meetings. 
  • Present current research or novel techniques in local, regional, and/or national meetings, in either poster or presentation form. 
  • Assist in developing new animal models and techniques to broaden the Animal Model Unit’s portfolio. 
  • Manage and complete all assigned tasks/projects in accordance with standardized operating procedures and in full compliance with all safety protocols. 
  • Independently complete complex experiments and review data in accordance with standardized operating procedures and in full compliance with safety protocols. 
  • Develop, write and update safety and procedure SOPs that relate to the Animal Models Unit and contribute to scientific manuscripts. 
  • Assist in the training of research staff with respect to animal handling and other related skills. 
  • Review laboratory methods, manuals, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to experiments. 
  • Complete and maintain written and electronic documentation of research activities in real-time according to standardized record keeping procedures. 
  • Perform as Study Lead on Unit requests, interacting directly with requesting lab personnel to manage expectations for the study and deliver endpoint samples for processing and analysis. 
  • Collect and organize raw data into reports for interpretation and analyses.  
  • Provide input into experimental study design and planning and into the development of new laboratory protocols. 
  • Perform protocol troubleshooting using independent thought to identify technical problems and implement modifications as necessary. 
  • Assist in scheduling upcoming experiments that come through the Animal Models Unit request system.  
  • Perform live animal imaging experiments.  
  • Assist with the ordering of live animals, coordinating with vendors and maintaining current census to accommodate all incoming orders. 
  • Perform additional duties as requested by Animal Models Unit Manager and RBL/DHVI leadership. 

 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT THIS LEVEL: 

  • Education/Training: Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
  • Experience: Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
