Occupation Summary

 

Duke Utility & Engineering Services (DUES) includes various operating units that provide comprehensive utility and engineering services to the Duke Campus and Medical Center. These units include Chilled Water, Steam, Electrical HV Systems, Water (encompassing water, sewer, and stormwater), Energy Management, and Engineering. The High Voltage Systems organization is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the high voltage distribution system and campus site lighting. DUES is part of the Facilities Management Department (FMD) reporting to the Vice President for Facilities Services. This position reports to the High Voltage System Manager.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The High Voltage System Engineer is responsible for scoping, conducting engineering analysis, and planning for the campus power system. This role includes assisting in the development of design standards and participating in design reviews for power system projects. The engineer will manage campus high voltage metering, monitoring, and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems design and provide engineering support to project managers as necessary at project turnover.

 

Typical Duties:

  • Coordinate the design, procurement, and construction of new high voltage distribution systems to meet the needs of new or renovated facilities.
  • Review HV electrical plans, specifications, and equipment for new installations and renovations; inspect projects during and after installation and advise on compliance with specifications prior to University acceptance.
  • Assist in the development and updating of University standards and guidelines for future project planning, design, construction, and maintenance activities to ensure best practices are employed.
  • Advise and assist with problems involving electrical engineering and maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain electrical HV remote control and monitoring systems.
  • Prepare complex switching procedures.
  • Assist in the operation, maintenance, and design of medium voltage generation equipment and paralleling switchgear.
  • Prepare reports, analyses, and presentations as needed.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all activities comply with relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Contribute to sustainability initiatives and energy efficiency projects.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

 

B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and 3 years’ experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience skills.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Experience with high voltage (15KV) switchgear, distribution systems, generators, and underground distribution systems.
  • Basic knowledge of site lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70E)
  • Knowledge of and proficiency developing and using power systems metering and monitoring hardware and software
  • Basic knowledge of SCADA systems
  • Experience with SKM circuit analysis software or similar
  • Ability to create and maintain positive customer and stakeholder relationships.
  • Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • CAD drafting skills utilizing AutoCAD

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

 

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a specific engineering field relatedto construction (e.g. Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and eligibility for North Carolina licensure as an Engineer.

 

Experience

 

Work requires a minimum of three years experience in design, planning, evaluation and project management related to new construction and renovation of buildings and/or systems OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
