Occ Summary

Participate in or lead day-to-day operations of clinical genetic care delivery within the Medical Genetics division; perform a variety of duties involved in the execution of genetic counseling care.  Work independently and function as part of a medical genetics team under the supervision of a medical geneticist. 

 

Work Performed

  • Gather and review pertinent medical records and preparation for clinic visit.
  • Take a family pedigree and medical history and interpretation of said records.
  • Participate in clinical evaluation of patient.
  • Provide information about the medical genetic diagnosis, etiology, inheritance patterns, and risk of occurrence and reoccurrence.
  • Provide information about available reproductive options and prenatal diagnosis where appropriate.
  • Prepare case summaries and genetic counseling letter in an electronic medical record (EPIC).
  • Complete diagnosis coding and billing according to policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate scheduling of appointments for general, specialty and outreach genetics clinics.
  • Train and supervise graduate genetic counseling students in their clinical experiences.
  • Provide all learner types with education on genetic counseling via in-person or remote instruction. Prepare lectures & seminars, as needed.
  • Participate in Duke educational meetings and QA activities. Prepare needed education materials as requested.
  • Advise and consult with local and national lay organizations and community support groups through participation on boards, advisory councils and national meetings.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited program

 

Experience

Board Certification or eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC).
