Occupational Summary:

 

Duke Alumni Association (DAA) is seeking a Front-End Developer with Drupal development experience to join our team. The Front-End Developer is part of a Digital Services team that plans creates, distributes, and analyzes web pages, emails, multi-media products, and online services for an audience of Duke Alumni around the world.

 

The position requires the ability to assess the feasibility of projects, testing functional requirements and specifications, and research and recommend technical solutions, as well as a genuine passion for state of the art and emerging web technologies. Strong understanding of site functionality, site architecture, data flow, and intuitive navigation schemes is expected. This position reports to the Duke Alumni Association (DAA)’s Assistant Director, Web Development, Digital Services and is an integral part of the IT department.

 

Work Performed:

 

Deliver highly customized web-based software solutions that support the mission of the university by planning, architecting, developing, implementing, and supporting web technology infrastructure.

 

Assist in assessing short-term and long-term strategies and goals that will enable the group to meet its overall mission to provide DAA an excellent public presence online.

 

Consult with subject matter experts and/or research subject areas for writing projects; develop content and style based on characteristics of the audience and how and why information will be accessed; develop an appropriate organizational structure for document or set of documents.

 

Proofread and edit materials, applying commonly recognized editing and publishing standards to discrete elements of a document as well as assessing organization, cohesion, and effectiveness of documents; shape content to ensure consistency of publications within the organization.

 

Utilize contemporary practices, trends, and technologies in layout, design, and production of text and graphics for both print and online media.

Recommend standards for acceptable design and content of Duke University application interfaces and processes in coordination with University standards and policies.

 

Participate in and help lead forums and discussions for the growing Drupal community at Duke by presenting at meet-ups and other Duke community forums and sharing knowledge and code. Act as a resource for other developers across Duke University and Duke Health.

 

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Preferred Qualifications at this Level

 

Education/Training: Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in English, technical communication or a related field.

 

Experience: Work requires the ability to produce documents for a variety of media and in a variety of genres and coordinate [publication] projects, generally acquired through two years of experience in technical writing, with considerable knowledge of desktop publishing, or related experience

 

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

Skills/Qualifications Required:

• 2+ years of experience working in responsive web development with Drupal 7/8

• Comprehensive understanding of web development technologies including HTML, PHP, CSS (SASS), and JavaScript (including React, AngularJS, or similar) based on Photoshop or Sketch designs.

• Experience with Git or similar

• Familiarity with a multi-environment dev-to-production workflow

• Ability to determine functional requirements from wireframes and feature requests

• Ability to continuously learn and apply new technologies

• Motivated, focused and self-guiding; works well on a small team

• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences

 

Preferred:

• Familiarity with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and designing well-thought-out UIs for all users

• Familiarity with Web Services, such as REST and WebSockets

• Experience writing, maintaining, and tuning enterprise-scale web applications

• Comfortable using the UNIX command line

 

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: BA or BS in journalism, marketing, English, graphic design or related field.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of applicable experience required.

Graphic experience or background preferred. Proficiency with PC based environment in all Microsoft Office products, HTML, Dreamweaver, JavaScript, Acrobat, and some type of image editing product (Photoshop, etc.).
