Flow Cytometry Engineer

Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource Facility – Duke Human Vaccine Institute

 

OVERVIEW:

The DHVI Flow Cytometry Facility has been providing state-of-the-art flow-based analysis and cell sorting for over 25 years. The facility is housed on the Duke West Campus and on the newly renovated Duke RTP Campus. The facility currently has three sorters (two five-laser BD FACSymphony S6s and a four-laser BD FACSAria II). Also, the facility currently has six analytical cytometers (a five-laser BD FACSymphony A5, a four-laser BD LSRFortessa, a four-laser BD LSRII, a three-laser IntelliCyt iQue Screener Plus, and two MilliporeSigma Muses). The facility supports over 120 principal investigators, provides comprehensive training for 24/7 independent use of analytical instruments, and sorts samples at biosafety levels 1, 2 and 3, including CDC Select Agents. The Flow Cytometry Engineer position will be responsible for maintaining and operating cytometers, and implementing innovative cytometry-based approaches in support of the scientific research activities of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute and collaborating entities. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Fully comply with appropriate DHVI/GHRB Safety and Compliance SOPs.  
  • Run cell sorters/analyzers to meet the needs of all facility end users, as directed by the Facility Director, Manager and DHVI leadership. 
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades on sorters and analyzers.  
  • Work with DHVI Flow Facility Director/Manager in development of new flow cytometric technologies and applications. 
  • Ensure data, run templates, sort reports and all associated documents/files per end user and facility SOPs are uploaded into appropriate facility archival systems. 
  • Maintain Select Agent Authorization and BSL-3 work certification.  
  • Perform other duties as requested by the DHVI Flow Facility Director/Manager, Shared Resources Scientific Director, COO and Director. 

 

WORK HOURS:   

You must be willing and available to work flexible hours which may include later start and end times with the understanding that work hours may need to be extended until a project/task has reached a logical and acceptable stopping point to maintain the integrity of the science. You also must be willing to travel between and work at both main campus and RTP laboratories. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in science related field or electronic technology related field. Four years of military technical training and/or vocational training in electronics or technology may substitute for the degree requirement. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct relevant experience.

Willing and able to: 

  • Work with hazardous biological agents handled at BSL2 and BSL3.
  • Comply with vaccination requirements when necessary.
  • Complete US Department of Justice screening for Select Agent registration. 
  • Complete Select Agent registration at Tier 1. 
  • Achieve external certification for independent work at BSL3.

 

DESIRED SKILLS: 

  • Experience in maintenance/repair and operation of BD FACS Aria II and/or other BD flow cytometers. 
  • Experience in BD cytometry software, including DIVA. 
  • Experience in Biosafety Levels 2 and 3 containment.
