The Executive Director of Digital Value Creation is responsible for streamlining operations, driving initiatives that reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. This role leads projects that assess and leverage alternate revenue streams, through technology enabled workflow redesign across administrative and support functions for Duke Health Technology Solutions (DHTS). This role is part of the DHTS senior/executive leadership team and will report directly to the Chief Digital Officer.
Key Responsibilities:
Enterprise-Wide Workflow Redesign: In partnership with the Chief Health Information Officer (CHIO) and Chief Data Officer (CDO), align clinical and non-clinical workflows using analytics, automation, and emerging digital tools. Identify and leverage cutting-edge analytics and AI to enhance throughput and minimize overhead.
Revenue Cycle Optimization & Payer Strategies: Serve as a subject matter expert and leverage trends in reimbursement models and payer contracting to improve prior authorization rates, billing processes, and reduce denial rates and—enhance revenue collection. Co-lead programs and projects with the Digital Strategy Officer and CHIO to ensure clinical documentation supports value-based and fee-for-service payer requirements.
Financial Modeling & Value Tracking: Responsible for building robust ROI models to measure financial impact of each initiative, in coordination with the chief Operating Officer/Chief of Staff and Finance teams. Develop dashboards and metrics that illustrate cost savings, revenue growth, and margin improvements.
New Service Line Development: Collaborate with service line leaders (for example) Radiology and Critical Care) to expand or create tele-radiology, tele-ICU, or other virtual specialty consultation programs as new revenue sources. Develop business models, proformas, and go-to-market strategies for new MSO services that Duke can offer to external provider networks (IT, Rev Cycle, Supply Chain)
Strategic Technology Partnerships: Engage with the Executive Director for Industry Partnerships/Data Licensing and the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to evaluate, negotiate, and launch new technology partnerships or acquisitions that complement Duke’s existing digital portfolio. Oversee due diligence and integration strategy for any technology or service acquisitions focused on Backoffice optimization.
AI-Enabled Solutions for Administrative Functions: Collaborate with DIHI (Duke Institute for Health Innovation) to identify the highest-impact administrative use cases for AI and machine learning. Champion the adoption, training, and evaluation of AI tools to streamline “Backoffice” tasks across Duke Health.
Backoffice Operational Transformation: Identify high-volume, high-cost administrative workflows (e.g., prior authorizations, scheduling, coding/billing) and in coordination with PRMO, implement AI-driven, process-optimized solutions that reduce cycle times and lower overall expenditures. Partner with Finance to track ROI and establish best practices in workforce optimization.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Team Development: Collaborate with the senior team to align strategic roadmaps and avoid duplication. Recruit, mentor, and manage a specialized team focusing on Backoffice transformation and digital value creation.
Culture of Continuous Improvement: The Executive Director is responsible for developing effective collaborative- working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Coach direct reports, provide advice, feedback and development resources to improve the effectiveness of individuals and teams. Provide guidance and support to team-members, while focusing on the Duke Health cultural values.
Governance & Communication: Coordinate with the Strategic Director to develop, ROI updates for the Board, senior executives, and frontline staff on progress and results. Maintain alignment with Duke Health’s mission, values, and compliance standards.
• Education & Experience
o Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree or equivalent experience strongly preferred).
o 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare, technology, or related industries, with a focus on workflow optimization, product management, telehealth, or strategic consulting.
o Demonstrated success in leading large-scale transformation initiatives and cross-functional teams.
o Proven track record of achieving ROI, revenue growth, or cost savings through technology-driven solutions.
• Technical & Functional Skills
o Strong knowledge of healthcare reimbursement systems, payer contracting, revenue cycle management, and digital health technologies.
o Familiarity with AI/ML applications, data analytics, and Lean/Six Sigma methodologies.
o Experience in evaluating and integrating partnerships, joint ventures, or mergers/acquisitions.
o Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex technical projects into clear business value.
• Leadership & Soft Skills
o Ability to collaborate effectively with clinical, administrative, and technology teams at all levels, including C-suite executives.
o Adept at building and leading high-performance teams, developing talent, and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
o Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills. Ability to effectively utilize situational awareness and self-awareness to guide and successfully lead teams.
