Research Data Tech II Position

 

The Duke Toxicology Program at the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Division (OEM) provides toxicological evaluations and risk assessments for potentially hazardous substances in consumer and commercial arts and craft product formulations. Evaluations include an assessment for regulatory compliance against federal, state, and international laws regulating consumer product hazard labeling and worker hazard communication. The evaluation process includes the application of a Toxicology Data Base Management System (DMS). The DMS is an internally-developed computerized expert system that applies toxicological risk assessment paradigms to produce confidential reports to clients. The DMS requires accurate input of qualitative and quantitative product information.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The data scientist/technician will help the program execute important tasks including but not limited to programming/coding projects in the .NET programming language. In addition, the data /scientist/technician will review and enter (promptly and accurately) analytical data in order to properly evaluate product formulations for safety and compliance review and enter confidential product formulations for proper toxicological analyses. The position will require the following:

 

 Learn the architecture and programming language of the DMS effectively for testing the results of executed mathematical calculations related to toxicological risk assessments.

 Maintain confidentiality regarding topics of proprietary origin and impact.

 Interpret information on laboratory reports for proper documentation and processing in the DMS.

 Ability to effectively communicate and work with external clients to ensure proper and accurate product formula documentation.

 Ability to problem-solve with the DMS, challenge the status quo, and communicate effectively and amicably with the Toxicology Program Group members.

 

MINIUMUM REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

 

A. Minimum Education and Training:

 

  Bachelor’s degree in a scientific data field such as mathematics, engineering or computer science

 

B. Minimum experience, length of years and type:

 

- 2 years working with a programming language such as FOXPRO or .NET

- 2 years working with large sets of data for analysis

 

C. Special knowledge, abilities, skills, physical requirements or other factors:

 

  • Knowledge of basic chemical principles and units of analytical measurements is a plus.
  • Ability to work and deliver in a team-environment with strict time tables.

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $ 18.69 to USD $28.28.
