Occ Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient car e support partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practica l Nurse (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA pro videsdirect care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care uni t coordination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform ba siccare andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient po pulationneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected toassist the RN/LPN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individua lisexpected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy ofevery patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpa tient care. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic policiesan dprocedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They a reexpected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral un it upkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as neede d, with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate verbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriate ly in the electronic health record.


Work Performed

Pr epare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovid emanual assistance as required.Obtain and record patient data for medica l records noting and informingRN/LPN of information collected.Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including,but notlimi ted to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nailcare, bed-ma king, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, andbowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the person al needs and comfort of assigned patients.Participate in teaching activi ties by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providers as needed. Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helpingpositio n patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients.Takeandr ecord vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags. Note andreportany cha nges in patient's condition. Turn and position patients,set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with freshdrinking water.Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriatetraining, docum ent and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, and transportati on of patients. Followstandard precautions and use personal protectiveeq uipment as required.Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patien t specimens. Cleanassigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipm ent as required.Participate in own professional development by maintaini ng requiredskills validation and attending educational offerings. Suppor t thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.May also performclea n dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.Perform other relatedduti es incidental to work described herein.


Knowledge,Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involve d in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working kno wledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precau tions applicable to work in a hospital.Working knowledge of the organiza tion and physical layout of thehospital.Working knowledge ofinfection co ntrol procedures and safetyprecautions.Ability to withstandprolonged sta nding and walking.This position is very active and requiresstanding, wal king, bending,kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling andclimbing allda y. Theemployee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighin g over35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computerand/or paper docume ntation tools.Ability to establish and maintain effectiveworking relatio nships withpatients and hospital staff.Working knowledgeof principles an d practices of providing non-professional bedside patient care.Pre-emplo yment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.

Education

Work requires gradua tion from an accredited high school or a GED.Successful completion of th e NCA I training as defined by the Divisionof Facility Services in the S tate of North Carolina or North CarolinaEMT training.Work requires the a bility to understand and follow oral and writteninstructions.
