You'll work on complex electrical systems, troubleshoot sophisticated equipment, and help maintain critical infrastructure while advancing your professional skills.

What You'll Do:

Electrical Installation & Construction
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems and equipment up to 600 volts.
  • Layout, assemble, and install wiring systems in accordance with blueprints, specifications, and National Electrical Code (NEC) standards.
  • Size and install conduit, conductors, switches, outlets, disconnects, junction boxes, lighting systems, electrical panels, transformers, and related equipment.
  • Install motor control circuits, switchgear, intrusion alarm systems, battery banks, battery chargers, grounding systems, and electrical systems in hazardous locations.
  • Calculate electrical load requirements, conductor sizing, protective devices, and system protection needs.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment and infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and repair motors, motor control systems, starters, battery systems, switchgear circuits, voltage regulators, relays, control switches, and electrical appliances.
  • Inspect, test, maintain, and repair power conditioners, frequency converters, grounding systems, and related electrical equipment.
  • Replace electrical components including meters, surge protectors, relays, voltage regulators, and control switches.
  • Interpret plans, diagrams, blueprints, sketches, electrical symbols, and technical specifications to diagnose and resolve issues.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all applicable safety regulations, procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Support Duke's commitment to chemical safety, hazard communication, fire prevention, housekeeping, and injury prevention programs.
  • Inspect electrical work to ensure compliance with state, local, and National Electrical Code requirements.
Leadership & Team Support
  • Assign, direct, and review the work of lower-level employees.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and on-the-job training to team members.
  • Assist in developing employee competencies and supporting career progression.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and operational excellence.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of electrical theory, principles, and power distribution systems.
  • Ability to calculate voltage, current, resistance, power requirements, and conductor sizing.
  • Knowledge of transformer theory and application.
  • Experience using electrical testing and diagnostic equipment, including:
    • Megger
    • Phase Rotation Meter
    • Clamp-On Ammeter
    • Digital Multimeter
    • Infrared Scanner
    • Circuit Tracer
  • Ability to install, maintain, and troubleshoot:
    • Motors and motor control systems
    • Switchgear and electrical panels
    • Battery banks and battery chargers
    • Grounding systems
    • Intrusion alarm systems
    • Frequency converters and power conditioning equipment
    • Electrical systems in hazardous environments
  • Proficiency with electrician hand tools, specialty tools, and shop equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate work activities with multiple trades and stakeholders.
  • Experience with firestopping and code-compliant installations.
  • Effective communication and training skills.

  • Seven (7) years of electrical construction or maintenance experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires educational background normally equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires National Electrical Code classes (internal); training on lockout/tag out (internal); and Fire stop certification (internal). Work requires North Carolina electrician's licensure or certification.

Experience

Work requires six years in electrical construction or maintenance, which may include time in an approved apprenticeship program (up to 2 years experience may be waived with a NC Limited Electrical License). OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
