Clinical Exercise Physiologist – Duke Center for Living
Clinical Exercise Physiologist – full-time research position, on-site
Primary responsibilities include:
- Conduct diagnostic testing independently as required and per study protocol, including maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing with 12-lead ECG interpretation without direct physician supervision
** NOTE: applicants must exhibit strong 12-lead ECG interpretation skills **
- Monitor exercise vital signs (including heart rate, blood pressure, symptoms, blood glucose)
- Develop exercise prescriptions for research patient populations according to protocol guidelines
- Supervise exercise training sessions by guiding research participants through their prescribed study intervention
- Assist with daily operations of clinical research protocols, including data acquisition and proper study documentation
- Follow strategies to manage and retain research participants
- Employ procedures for collecting, preparing, processing, shipping, and maintaining inventory of specimens
Occupational Summary
The Duke Molecular Physiology Institute (DMPI), a part of Duke University Medical Center, occupies a place of national and international leadership in the fight against major diseases. Our mission is to produce integrated multi-omics and physiologic profiles of chronic human diseases, and to use such profiles to develop new disease detection strategies, novel therapies, and insights into disease mechanisms.
A full-time Clinical Exercise Physiologist is needed to join a DMPI study team conducting human subject clinical research at the Duke Center for Living campus. This Clinical Translation Research Division within the DMPI conducts multiple federal and industry funded projects involving healthy individuals, individuals with Type 2 diabetes those at risk for diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases, as well as other clinical conditions.
Work Performed
This position will work closely with PIs and other members of a well-established clinical research team to support ongoing physiological studies involving muscle and fat biopsies, serial blood sampling, body composition analysis, strength assessments, cardiorespiratory fitness evaluations, and supervised exercise interventions.
This position will develop, coordinate, and implement exercise related programs for clinical research trials. This position will supervise exercise training sessions, conduct diagnostic testing, assist with research protocols, complete data acquisition and documentation, develop exercise programs for research participants, and monitor progress of participants in the performance of prescribed exercise regimens to include personal motivation as well as assessment of participants’ tolerance of exercise program.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Work requires a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Physical Education or related field.
Experience
None required beyond Education/Training requirement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong 12-lead ECG interpretation skills are required
- Ability to recognize symptom changes or signs of problems to activate the appropriate medical response and processes
- Current BLS certification with ACLS certification obtained within 6 months of hire
- ACSM clinical certification as Clinical Exercise Physiologist
The ideal candidate will have previous experience in cardiac rehabilitation, health risk appraisal, comprehensive fitness testing, exercise prescriptions, working in a clinical environment, interacting with older adults and other special populations, and a desire for helping others achieve their health/wellness goals.
This position requires a high level of professionalism with strong organizational skills, attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
