Work Schedule: Monday - Friday from 7:00am-3:30pm 

 

 

General Duties

The general duties of a Dock Associate center on day-to-day management and safety of the loading dock. These responsibilities are essential for ensuring a smooth flow of goods and a secure work environment.


 

Responsibilities

Levels I & II

  • Perform daily dock rounds to ensure the baler is made and docks are always clear.
  • Ensure that all products and items are delivered or that customers are contacted before the end of the shift.
  • Ensure customers, vendors, and internal staff follow all safety and operational guidelines as directed by the Dock Coordinator.
  • Provide feedback to leadership and work with a team of 8 to 9 other associates to provide superior service to hospital operations.

Levels I & II

You must have the ability and willingness to perform additional job functions (within reason) that are necessary to ensure safe patient care practices as directed by Supply Chain management. You are required to be cross-trained and perform other Supply Chain-related duties when needed.

  • Effectively communicate with peers, supervisors, and other departments that interact with the Dock Management Department, including Parking and Transportation, Duke Fire and Life Safety, Duke OESO, Durham Fire Department, and Duke Police.
  • Coordinate vendor deliveries, including truck appointments and dock space management, using Duke-approved software.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment. This includes maintaining safe egress pathways on the dock, clearly defined walkways, proper use of docking plates, proper truck parking, and no blocked fire hydrants, while always following both Duke and Durham fire safety regulations.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work in a dynamic setting. This involves collaborating with peers and leaders from multiple departments on dock access, appointment scheduling, and understanding the different roles each department plays.
  • Possess superior communication skills and the ability to work in an ever-changing environment. Clear and concise communication is important to ensure dock operations run continuously.
  • Physical ability to lift, pull, bend, and move pallets and/or carts daily, as well as the ability to use an electric pallet jack.
  • Ability to work with technology-based systems to create, manage, and adjust appointments (e.g., Open Dock and SYFT GHX), and to deliver and receive packages via handheld technology.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

 

Education

  • A High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Some college-level coursework is preferred but not required.

 

Experience

  • Level 1: At least one year of work experience in one of the following areas: distribution, warehousing, shipping, receiving, logistics, material handling, customer service, inventory control, or another comparable service line. Experience in a fast-paced customer service environment is strongly preferred.
  • Level 2: Two years of work experience, including experience in at least one of the following disciplines: distribution, warehousing, shipping, receiving, logistics, material handling, customer service, inventory control, or another comparable service line.

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • A valid driver's license may be required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Level 1:
    • Must be able to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • The job requires the ability to push/pull unloaded and loaded supply carts, with the duty requiring up to 100 pounds of exertional force daily.
    • Reaching, lifting, stooping, and bending are frequent daily duties.
    • You must have the ability to improve processes to enhance services, work cooperatively with others to achieve organizational and team goals, and contribute to new ideas and problem-solving.
    • Possess a sense of urgency and a proactive customer service philosophy
  • Level 2:
    • In addition to the above, you must have experience using an ERP system and competency in inventory management.
