Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs is a hybrid workplace. All team members must live within the local area, have access to, and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service. The ability to work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools is a must. At the discretion of the manager, some positions will be required to work in our office located in Durham, NC for a specified number of days per week.
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
The Director of Development, Special Initiatives at Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs will report to the Assistant Vice President of Individual Giving. This role is pivotal in raising philanthropic support for various institutional priorities, special initiatives, and campaign themes within Duke Health, including Duke Human Vaccine Institute, AI Health, Climate & Health, Duke Clinical & Translational Science Institute and Duke Clinical Research Institute.
This individual will be a fundraiser, builder, strategist, and creative and collaborative problem solver. They will work to build and enhance collaborative relationships with faculty, leadership, and internal colleagues across assigned areas, as well as Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs, with the goal of advancing fundraising and Duke Health’s mission.
WORK PERFORMED
Fundraising 70%
- Develop and execute strategies to secure major gifts and philanthropic support for assigned institutional priorities, special initiatives, and campaign themes within Duke Health.
- Grow and manage a pool of prospects capable of making gifts of $100k or more, from identification to stewardship.
- Coordinate and ensure effective stewardship and recognition of donors’ philanthropy.
- Write or assist in drafting proposals and other materials as necessary; assist with publicity arrangements on important gifts, programs, accomplishments, or events.
- Manage communication of information, including briefings, development agendas, and reporting to assigned faculty leaders. Collaborate with leadership, faculty, and development professionals to develop persuasive fundraising proposals, case statements, and collateral materials.
- Monitor fundraising progress, develop contact reports, enter data into tracking databases, and operate within a standardized metric program.
Strategic Planning and Program Implementation 20%
- Forge strong partnerships throughout the organization, establish and maintain regular communication with faculty to build a successful development partnership.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with faculty, leadership, internal colleagues, key stakeholders, alumni, and community leaders to identify and engage potential donors.
- Work closely with faculty leadership in assigned areas to develop compelling strategies, priorities, and collaterals that align with Duke Health’s priorities and central missions of research, education, and care.
- Build annual and long-term goals for philanthropy in assigned areas.
- Assist administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional programs.
- Develop, evaluate, and refine plans and timetables for departmental or theme assignments; assist in planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs.
- Partner effectively with colleagues across Duke Health and Duke University. Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues on all Duke Health fundraising teams and across Duke University to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors.
- Interact with key stakeholders to garner support for strategic initiatives. Ensure goals and programs are contextualized and communicated within Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs and to fundraisers across campus.
- Serve as a member of the Individual Giving fundraising team and help donors see the relationship between patient care and the underlying science, research, and educational needs within Duke Health.
Portfolio Development and Management 10%
- Successfully maintain and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects.
- Follow procedures in coordination with the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgement, and follow-up on all private gifts to assigned areas.
- Develop contact reports and enter moves and data into tracking databases.
- Work successfully with colleagues across the institution to collaborate on prospects with multiple interests.
- Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs.

EXPERIENCE
Work requires five years of progressive fund-raising experience in a related organization with a proven track record in major gifts.
Campaign experience is desirable.
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
- Proven track record of securing six figure gifts and achieving fundraising targets.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $ 76,628.00 to USD $153,254.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Education
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
