JOB SUMMARY
The Director, HR Business Partner (HRBP) – Clinician Experience provides enterprise-level HR leadership supporting all non-faculty and non-regular rank faculty physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) across DUHS, including Duke Primary Care (DPC), Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP), and community-based DHIP (cDHIP).
This role ensures that HR processes and policies are aligned across the enterprise and are applied consistently and efficiently. The Director, HR Business Partner will ensure a high level of responsiveness and service to the unique needs of clinicians across DUHS, DHIP, and will collaborate with the School of Medicine. The Director does not oversee the physician hiring or faculty appointment processes. Instead, the role focuses on creating and evaluating policies and procedures rooted in our values and culture commitments, maintaining a positive work environment through creating accountability of professional behavior standards, coordination of leaves and ADA processes in a streamlined manner, ensuring accurate payroll operations, coordinate programs that promote clinician well-being with appropriate stakeholders.
The Director partners closely with School of Medicine (SOM), DHIP, and DUHS leadership to ensure that the delivery of HR processes that interface across both organizations are aligned to policy and deliver an excellent experience for clinicians and departmental leaders. The role also partners with the VP, Physician Compensation to ensure alignment between HR operations and payroll practices. The role will provide strategic support with escalations from the Clinician Service Center, serving as the lead for interpretation for physician and APP HR matters.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Professional Conduct & Employee Relations Alignment – Serve as senior escalation point for professional conduct, behavioral, and complex employee relations matters related to physicians and APPs. Partner with ER, Medical Staff Services, and Faculty Affairs to ensure consistent and fair management of clinician conduct concerns.
- Leaves of Absence, ADA, and Payroll Oversight – Oversee enterprise clinician leave and ADA processes in collaboration with the Clinician Service Center, SOM Hub and Talent Care Center Leave Administrator, and SOM HUB. Ensure accurate payroll and pay continuation for physicians and APPs, including stipends and protected academic time. Partner with VP, Physician Compensation to ensure alignment of HR operations and payroll practices.
- Policy Interpretation & Escalations – Serve as system-level authority for policy interpretation related to dual employment, academic appointments, and payroll. Resolve escalations from transactional HR teams and develop job aids, FAQs, and process tools for HR partners and department leaders.
- Well-Being & Engagement – Partner with the Duke Health Well-Being & Resilience Office, CAOs, and clinical leadership to support clinician wellness and engagement efforts. Identify trends and coordinate systemic solution
- Partnership & HR Governance – Partner with the School of Medicine and DHIP to ensure HR processes and policies that interface across both entities are aligned to enterprise standards and create a seamless experience for clinicians and leaders. Lead the Clinician HR Governance Council and maintain the Physician & APP HR Playbook.
- Leadership & Supervision – Lead and develop HRBP supporting physicians and APPs across DUHS and DHIP. Set performance expectations, manage workload distribution, and ensure process consistency across entities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Master’s degree preferred (Human Resources, Business, or Health Administration).
- Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive HR experience in a large health system or academic medical center, with demonstrated experience supporting physician and APP populations.
- Prior experience working with dual employment/faculty structures preferred.
- Experience leading HRBPs or specialists in a matrixed organization strongly desired.
