The Director of DHDAA Technology Systems and Services is responsible for overseeing the various technology systems and services used across Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs’ (DHDAA).
Reporting to the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Advancement Operations this position will function as a key member of the AVP’s management team while leading a team of technical staff responsible for DHDAA’s Salesforce CRM; Information Management & Business Intelligence; the Departmental Intranet; third-party platforms; and its Systems Training, Education & Support program.
The Director will set technical and managerial guidelines in developing and delivering client-based, network-based, third-party, and web-based solutions and services. This position will collaborate with other units across DHDAA, the Duke Development community, Duke Health Technology Services (DHTS) and/or the Office Information Technology (OIT) while developing and delivering solutions.
The Director will serve as the departmental security liaison to DHTS while ensuring all systems/solutions are fully compliant with the University’s security policies and procedures. This includes serving as the primary point person with Duke’s Risk/Compliance office and the Information Security Office. The Director will oversee all risk assessments associated with any software implementations and/or third-party platforms used throughout DHDAA.
The Director will develop a comprehensive systems training, education, and support program that is inclusive of the various systems used throughout DHDAA.

DEPARTMENT PREFERENCES/SKILLS
- This position requires an experienced technology professional with exceptional strength in technical systems administration and support.
- The ability to motivate and engage a team of employees through effective communication to achieve program goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively and present to staff/colleagues/clients to achieve effective outcomes.
- Experience preparing and presenting executive level presentations and findings.
- Knowledge of emerging technologies including business intelligence, artificial intelligence, data processing, database programming and data analytics is essential.
- Sound understanding of BI best practices and methodologies, relational data structures, dimensional modeling, data warehouse and reporting techniques.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of data visualization, data manipulation and statistical analysis software such as SAS, SPSS, R, Tableau, MS Power BI, or similar BI tools.
- Advanced skills in Excel (Pivot Tables, Data Analysis Tool Pack), PowerPoint, or MS Access.
- Demonstrated knowledge of web development platforms and tools such as WordPress, SharePoint, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, etc.
- Demonstrated proficiency in working with large, complex databases.
- Able to understand various data structures and common methods in data transformation.
- Proficient with Structured Query Language (SQL).
- Strong organizational, planning, and coordination skills - the ability to organize, prioritize work, meet deadlines and work independently.
- Be a creative problem solver, flexible, initiative-taking and ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
- Be self-driven and show ability to deliver on ambiguous projects with incomplete or dirty data.
- Experience with programming languages such as Java/Python is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to manage confidential, sensitive, and protected health information.
- Knowledge and experience in a large, complex higher education fundraising operation is preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education - Bachelor's Degree in a related area, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience.
Experience - Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in technical systems and people management. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in systems infrastructure administration, database management, business continuity, and end-user support strongly preferred.

Strategic Leadership and Management (50%)
- Execute the strategic direction of DHDAA’s technology systems and services.
- Lead all new technology-related initiatives and direct the goal planning process of the technology systems and services teams.
- Anticipate, plan, and respond for the needs of new tools and capabilities to the web and networked resources by researching/evaluating and testing emerging technologies and tools.
- Manage and develop technical staff with varied skillsets to meet the present and changing needs across DHDAA.
- Ability to understand the range of technical skills employed and to provide informed direction for effective systems and solutions.
- Oversee the strategic and tactical decisions while leading day-to-day activities of the technical service teams.

- Teams consist of Salesforce Administration, Information Management and Business Intelligence (IMBI), and Web Development.
- Manage both small and large projects and provide work oversight for the group.
- Ensure each service team responds to requests by gathering business requirements while making certain new/enhanced solutions are well-documented and correctly updated.
- Manage staff; recruit/select staff; ensure proper resourcing, develop training and development plans, determine goals, assign responsibilities, review and approve work, give direction and encouragement, coordinate activity and ensure sound outcomes; serve as coach and mentor; administer performance evaluations.
- Oversee all Request for Proposal (RFP) processes for technical solutions.
- Provide key insights on trending analysis along with long-term impact assessments.
- Partner with senior leadership to drive sound, data-driven business decisions.
- Collaborate and consult with other departments to develop and implement KPI's, automated reporting/process solutions and data infrastructure improvements to meet business needs.
- Stay current on all technology tools available through OIT and/or DHTS.
- Serve on CRM advisory councils and/or product enhancements governing body.
- Work with industry peers to share and leverage best practices with other shared services functions.
- Manage the unit’s budget, including the budget request process.

- Determine budgetary needs and recommend prioritization(s) based on program objectives.
- Oversee and manage the budget for various third-party software/user licenses such as Smartsheet, Blackbaud/Luminate, Tableau, and Oracle/Eloqua.
- Manage non-personnel expenses and life-cycle costs for technology infrastructure and support needs.
Technical Administration (40%)
- Provide technical expertise, leadership, project management and planning to teams within DHDAA.
- Oversee a variety of third-party platforms and tools utilized across DHDAA, which includes, but not limited to GOBEL’s Gift-to-Gratitude, Oracle/Eloqua, Blackbaud/Luminate, Smartsheet, and Tableau.
- Manage vendor relationships and contract renewals with technology service providers.
- Diagnose and research technical anomalies and recommend/implement solutions.
- Ensure that all solutions and third-party platforms are stable and fully compliant with the institution’s privacy and security requirements.
- Gain thorough knowledge of how and where all departmental data exists and how it is related.
- Ensure data integrity and consistent data usage.
- Implement and oversee a file management best practices strategy while ensuring all of DHDAA’s data are safeguarded.
- Evaluate and enhance DHDAA’s systems training, education, and support program; ensure that staff are cross trained, and that sufficient support exists across all service lines.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationship with DHTS-Analytics Center of Excellence (ACE) to stay abreast of data analytics infrastructure changes and institutional standards for data access, quality assurance and code development.
- Interpret the technology needs of cross-departmental partners and present relevant approaches to support or realize those needs.
Information Technology Security Liaison: (10%)
- Serve as DHDAA’s Information Security Liaison to DHTS while ensuring all systems meet Duke’s security requirements and are free of security vulnerabilities.
- Provide consultation on effective security measures related to Payment Card Industries (PCI), HIPAA, FERPA and other regulations governing the protection of sensitive data.
