Deep Tech Program Research Data Tech II – Semiconductors and OpenAI Project

 

The Deep Tech Program at Duke, within the Sanford School of Public Policy, explores how deep technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced semiconductors and green hydrogen will impact business and society. Duke’s approach to technology policy places a priority on research and outreach that will make a practical impact. With initiatives in AI, climate, and cybersecurity already established, we are now seeking to strengthen our leadership in the semiconductor space and manage an exciting new partnership with OpenAI.

This part-time role will support program operations, project management, and thought leadership across these areas, with a focus on assisting with the OpenAI partnership and building out the semiconductors thought leadership. The position will report to Professor David Hoffman and work closely with Merritt Cahoon, faculty, external stakeholders, and other Deep Tech Fellows.

Position Description

 

This is a part-time role designed for a highly organized and communicative individual to help manage key aspects of the Deep Tech Program’s OpenAI partnership, website, outreach, and communication strategy. The position will also play a pivotal role in strengthening our semiconductors strategy by organizing research and elevating Duke’s voice in national semiconductor policy.

 

Responsibilities

  • Communications: Draft content for newsletters, blog posts, and social media. Maintain consistent outreach to highlight research and programming.
  • Project Oversight: Support projects in the AI Metascience program from the OpenAI partnership
  • Event Planning: Assist in the design, outreach, and execution of a semiconductor-focused event in Fall 2025.
  • Collaborative Support: Work with other associates and student researchers across the Deep Tech sectors to foster cross-sector insights and outputs.

Minimum Required Qualifications at this Level

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with experience or coursework in technology policy, engineering, or public policy.
  • Demonstrated interest in artificial intelligence, semiconductor policy, or deep technologies.
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $ 18.69 to USD $28.28.
