Deep Tech Program Data Tech Research I – Quantum Computing
The Deep Tech Program at Duke, within the Sanford School of Public Policy, explores how deep technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced semiconductors and green hydrogen will impact business and society. Duke’s approach to technology policy places a priority on research and outreach that will make a practical impact. The research associate
focused on quantum computing will be a partner to Professor Hoffman and Merritt Cahoon in creating new programming, engaging students and sparking intellectual leadership in this space.
Position Description
The position will support the work of one of the current projects within the Deep Tech Initiative. This is a part time position. The Deep Tech Program is structured around five key focus areas: quantum computing, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, climate finance, and cybersecurity. While AI, cybersecurity, and climate finance have well-established partnerships and initiatives, there remains a critical need for expertise in quantum computing. The rapid advancement of quantum technology presents new challenges and opportunities that require specialized research and policy guidance.
By bringing in an expert in quantum computing, this role will help shape the program’s direction in this emerging field. The research associate will be instrumental in focusing research efforts, identifying strategic opportunities, and developing partnerships with industry leaders, academic institutions, and policymakers. Strengthening the program's expertise in quantum computing will ensure that Duke remains at the forefront of deep tech policy and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the strategic expansion of the Deep Tech initiative on quantum computing
- Engage with key stakeholders in outside educational and professional organizations to create partnerships
- Support Deep Tech research projects related to its broader portfolio, including projects related to the climate implications of semiconductors, AI, quantum computing and cybersecurity.
Minimum Required Qualifications at this Level
Work generally requires a Bachelor’s degree, preferably with significant coursework or training/prior experience in technology/cyber policy.

- Skilled in translating complex ideas and discussions into clear, actionable steps for execution
- Familiarity and/or experience with deep technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, leading-edge semiconductors and green hydrogen

Anticipated Pay Range
Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $18.69 to USD $28.28.
