General Description of the Job Class


The pharmacy technician will be based at our Duke Regional Outpatient Pharmacy location that is scheduled to open the first quarter of 2021.  The ideal candidate will be performing under supervision a variety of routine and advanced technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs in accordance with standard procedures and techniques. They must be able to balance efficiency with accuracy, work both independently and as a team in a fast-paced environment.  The candidate must demonstrate excellence in customer service and teamwork while ensuring all medication needs and regulatory compliance standards are met.  The candidate must model behaviors that exemplify our core values of safety, teamwork, excellence, diversity and integrity.


Duties and Responsibilities of this Level


  • Effectively follow workflow procedure with an in-depth understanding of each area (i.e., prescription receipt, data entry, pick-up, filling) for processing of patient medications. Deliver medications to patient care locations when appropriate.
  • Manage personal responsibilities while being able to shift to help team members
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop patient understandings
  • Contributes by looking for opportunities to contribute individual and broader team goals
  • Remains flexible for scheduling needs while easily adapting to a challenging work environment
  • Proactively identifying and resolving potential problems to ensure patients have their medications when needed.
  • Collaborates with immediate pharmacy team, insurance companies, and customers alike to resolve issues, ensure accuracy, and deliver a timely resolution of any medication or insurance related concerns
  • Prioritizing patient needs and displaying empathy in all interactions to ensure complete patient satisfaction
  • Actively seeks opportunities to expand clinical, technical and insurance knowledge
  • Independently able to contact patients via phone to coordinate pick-up of medications refills to ensure medication compliance
  • Complete and document all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly. Identify and replace outdated and unusable drugs. Monitor assigned quality improvement indicators of individual or departmental performance. Order, receive and stock medications and supplies.  Package medications as required for dispensing.
  • Weekend day shifts possible as the service expands.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.


Required Qualifications at this Level



High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a certified pharmacy technician training program.


Acceptance into pharmacy school.


High school diploma or equivalent and one year of pharmacy or health care related experience.



One to two years of previous outpatient, retail/community pharmacy experience, highly preferred.


Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Must be eligible for registry with the NC Board of Pharmacy


Pharmacy Technician Certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred
