Duke University is seeking a Diesel & Bus Mechanic to help keep our fleet safe, reliable, and ready to serve the campus community. In this hands‑on role, you’ll perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on diesel and gasoline‑powered buses and other fleet equipment—supporting daily operations that keep Duke moving.
You’ll work in a team‑oriented environment, apply your technical expertise across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, and contribute to consistent maintenance standards. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in quality work, values safety, and enjoys solving complex mechanical problems.
Minimum Requirements
- High school education or equivalent, with coursework in skilled crafts or trades
- 4 years of experience in heavy and light automotive repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with diesel and gasoline‑powered buses or fleet vehicles
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
Other Requirements
- Ability to maintain accurate work orders and maintenance documentation
- Willingness to support inventory tracking and preventive maintenance programs
- Work Arrangement: Onsite Schedule: Monday–Friday, 12:30 PM–9:00 PM

Position Description (Essential Duties)
- Diagnose, inspect, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on diesel and gasoline‑powered buses and fleet equipment
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and implement effective repairs
- Assist with machining parts to meet technical and operational requirements
- Execute scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, and work orders
- Support inventory management for tools, equipment, and supplies
- Provide guidance and technical support to entry‑level personnel
- Perform additional duties as needed to support fleet operations
