DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, DUKE GARDENS
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
A hybrid position – offsite and in-person.
An exempt position that will require occasional weekend and evening hours as needed.
Reporting to the Director of Development & Major Gifts, the Development Officer is an integral member of Sarah P. Duke Gardens’ Development Team and a frontline fundraiser for the Gardens. The Development Officer identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards prospects and leadership donors through both individual and programmatic outreach. With a special focus on prospective leadership annual fund donors and building the major gifts pipeline, the Development Officer will engage with Gardens constituents in person (both on campus and in region) and virtually. In addition, the Development Officer will work collaboratively with the development team to develop and implement alumni and community engagement strategies and programs that will engage constituents in ways that align with larger institutional goals, including the Garden Gateway capital campaign. This position may qualify for a partial remote work arrangement.
Work Performed
· Identify, cultivate and solicit leadership level prospects for the Duke Gardens; recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies of individual prospects, consulting with the director of development, the executive director, additional staff and volunteers as appropriate; meet with prospects and volunteers, traveling as necessary.
· Assist administrators and staff in the recognition and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional and departmental priorities, and Gardens programs, personalities and events, and use this information to further development efforts.
· Maintain knowledge of current tax laws, investments and planned giving opportunities; use knowledge in prospect cultivation and solicitation as appropriate.
· Cultivate and present proposals to corporate and foundation prospects as requested, including grant writing and reporting.
· Write or edit proposals and other materials appropriate to program assignment; assist with publicity arrangements on important gifts, programs, accomplishments or events.
· Serve as one of Duke Gardens’ liaisons to Duke’s Alumni Engagement and Development Office (AED), communicating Gardens development activities, and looking for opportunities to collaborate with other school and unit development officers throughout the University on cultivation and solicitation of multi-interest prospects.
· Enlist and train volunteers and volunteer organizations; suggest changes to strengthen membership of existing volunteer boards or organizations.
· Develop, evaluate and refine plans and timetables for program assignments; determine feasibility and supervise planning of cultivation events or programs.
· Participate in professional development opportunities, on campus and through national organizations.
· Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires five years of experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fund raising, sales and promotions, marketing, or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in general fundraising activities and proposal development. Experience in higher education fundraising is preferred. Knowledge of Duke Gardens or Duke University is preferred OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes: outstanding written and oral communication skills, collaborative nature and willingness to travel. Given the nature of the role, the successful candidate will possess all physical and mental skills necessary to plan and execute domestic travel as needed without restriction.
