Occupational Summary
We are seeking a full-time data manager/analyst to support two large-scale studies in India and South America.  The project in India aims to understand long-term health and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project in South America is supporting the development and implementation of a malaria early warning system for the Amazon region. Both projects require expertise in managing and/or analyzing large, complex, longitudinal datasets. This position will support one project team in the Sanford School of Public Policy as well as one in the Nicholas School of the Environment.

 

Work Performed

A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows:

  • Implement data management protocols for the project, including set up of multiple datasets, documentation, data cleaning, creation of codebooks, and quality checks
  • Develop detailed data access documentation that will be used for subsequent data dissemination
  • Coordinate with field partners in India, Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil on data transfers and processing
  • Coordinate with Duke OIT and supporting research team members in accessing and using the data; train and support research team members in using the virtual machine and network data storage as the team composition evolves over the period of the study
  • Analyze data (STATA, R, or SAS expertise required; familiarity with Python ArcGIS or other programs is a plus) 
  • Enter, clean, and curate data, including de-stringing variables, re-coding variables, creating new analysis variables, and merging data across waves. 
  • Work with other team members to support the generation of data summaries statistics, running regressions as needed, creating crosstabs and generating data visualizations for planned policy briefs, reports as well as websites
  • Collaborate with the study team and contribute to research manuscripts as needed
  • Ensure that external and internal regulations and policies governing data management are met including regulations concerning security, auditability and privacy
  • Oversee the work of research assistants

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, or a computer related field or the equivalent coursework or technical training. Master’s level degree in related field such as biostatistics or computer science, preferred.

 

Experience
Work requires 2 years of progressive programming or database administration experience to include design, implementation, tuning, backup, recovery, modification and reorganization of relational databases for a complex computer network OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
