QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • LCSW or other counseling degree with certification
  • Expertise in behavioral health, substance use disorders, and other sources of “impairment” for health professionals and health professions students
  • Experience providing counseling to health professionals and/or health professions students
  • Familiarity with available resources to meet needs of health professions students within Duke (e.g., Student Health and CAPS) and in the Durham and surrounding community
  • Familiarity with SmartSheets and other dashboard-generating project management software
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with program leaders and students in HPE programs as well as individuals in Student Affairs and various offices on the Duke University Community
  • Ability to positively represent LE WELL in discussions in the School of Medicine and University Settings, with knowledge about various resources, opportunities, and fundable projects

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Meet annually with each incoming HPE student to perform and review a needs assessment (40%)

 

    1. For each student, create a list of available resources to promote success
    2. For each student, monitor and track progress and uptake of resources
    3. Be available to answer questions that may arise from students’ advisors and/or leadership in LE WELL

 

  1. Program Structure (20%):  Develop and maintain a web-based documentation system

 

    1. Develop and maintain an online transparent tracking system for administrators to track each student’s engagement, support strategies and university status
    2. Establish a dissemination and implementation plan for distributing standardized assessment measures for all SOM matriculating students and students entering clinical training

 

  1. Facilitate development and consistent implementation of an “impairment policy” in SOM programs, supporting advisor and program director uptake by helping students access appropriate assessment and care in keeping with the policy (10%):

 

    1. Information intake after student is pulled from duty for concern for impairment (keeping patients safe)
    2. Assessment by medical professionals (medical and/or behavioral health) regarding appropriate services
    3. Assistance to promote student access of adequate services to meet their behavioral and/or medical care needs (meeting student needs)
      1. Documenting and noting areas in need of further development within and outside of Duke’s available services for students
      2. Documenting and noting areas of strength regarding student-accessible services
      3. Documenting and noting areas of inconsistency within and between HPE programs in implementing policies and procedures
    4. Assessment for return to duty in conjunction with medical review officer / EOHW contracted individual and/or student health (with eye toward keeping patients safe)

 

  1. Develop a multidisciplinary review process for students returning from a time away (10%)

 

  1. Maintain working relationships with university resources and advocate for adequacy to meet health professions students’ needs: (10%)

  1. Provide summary data about student utilization rates and student feedback regarding utilization of various resources to help inform priorities for further development in LE WELL (using both service-level data and data, such as surveys and/or interviews and focus groups, of students) (10%)

    4. Primary care
    5. Substance Use disorder services

 

The work of the case manager may be performed remotely.  If asked to be physically present on the Duke (Durham, NC) campus, the case manager will be reimbursed up to $1500 per trip, up to two travel expenses per year.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

Work requires a Master's degree from an accredited school of social work.

 

Current licensure as a licensed clinical social worker by the NC Social Work and Certification and Licensure Board.

 

Experience

 

Three or more years of social work experience in a health care setting or social service agency with one of three years may be social work internship.

 

Two years recent post master's experience in a clinical setting preferred.
