Clinical Psychology Doctoral Internship - Psychiatry – C. Mauro

Duke University Medical Center’s APA-Accredited Clinical Psychology Doctoral Internship Training Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers training within the context and spirit of the scientist-practitioner and clinical scientist models. The overarching aim is to produce Clinical Psychologists who can demonstrate all profession-wide competencies and thrive in various academic and health care settings. A secondary aim is to help interns explore and develop areas of concentration that prepare them for early career development in research, clinical work, and/or education. The central vision of the Duke Internship Program is to provide both the breadth to ensure core competencies and opportunities to pursue depth in a specific concentration of Clinical Psychology.

Expectations of the Intern Upon Completion of Internship:

At the completion of the program, interns are expected to develop competency in the nine profession-wide competencies outlined in the Standards of Accreditation. The breadth and depth of experiences during the internship year serve them well in subsequent careers in clinical psychology. Graduates of the program may function as clinicians, researchers, and/or educators across a variety of settings.

Areas of Concentration During Internship:

The program offers two tracks: Adult Psychology Track and Child Psychology Track. Interns apply to one of these two tracks. Within each track, interns also specify an area of concentration as shown in the table below:

Internship Track Areas of Concentration
ADULT PSYCHOLOGY 1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Concentration (2 positions) 2. Eating Disorders Concentration (1 position) 3. Health Cancer Concentration (1 position) 4. Health General Concentration (2 positions)
CHILD PSYCHOLOGY 1. Child Clinical-Autism Concentration (1 position) 2. Child Clinical-General Concentration (1 position) 3. Child Clinical-Trauma Concentration (1 position) 4. Child Pediatric Psychology (1 position)

Both tracks afford interns the opportunity to integrate the multiple roles and responsibilities of a Clinical Psychologist in a health care setting. Interns learn through diverse clinical experiences. All interns participate in weekly core seminars designed to expose them to both basic and advanced concepts in clinical practice, including individual and cultural diversity, ethics and professionalism, and theories and methods of supervision.

Eligibility Requirements:

The program offers internship training to students who are currently enrolled in an APA-approved Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology and who have already completed three years of graduate study. The program has been continually accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1957.

Education Requirements:

Successful completion of all required coursework toward a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is preferred.
