Occupational Summary
As a member of the Office of Climate and Sustainability (OCS) and University Marketing and Communications (MarComms), the Climate Communications Coordinator, in consultation with the Director of Marketing and Communications for OCS and the AVP of Strategic Communications and Editorial Strategy, will implement a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan for the university-wide Climate Commitment, an interdisciplinary effort touching all facets of the university, involving all Duke schools, institutes, and centers.

 

  • We are seeking a talented communications generalist with strong writing skills who can also create digital elements to support the activities of Duke’s broader climate commitment. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinking and should be curious about climate-related issues as well as passionate about how communications and marketing can fill that need.
  • The professional in this role will take a collaborative approach to work across local, national and global levels. 
  • This position will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Office of Climate and Sustainability.
     


Work Performed

  • Advise and implement marketing and communications efforts including internal engagement strategies, audience awareness, and digital and social media. Track metrics of stakeholder engagement across various communications channels. 15%
  • Assist in implementing a strategic communications plan to engage external influencers and stakeholders, including news media and potential donors. 10%
  • Interact effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders including Climate Action Committee and Climate Commitment Advisory Council members, University leadership, faculty, staff, students, and communications colleagues across Duke University. Build and nurture internal stakeholder relationships. 10%
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the University communications community to produce and share print, web, and video content highlighting the important work of OCS, Duke’s Climate Commitment, climate research across disciplines, and of OCS’s strategic priorities. Work with OCS teammates to publicize and market OCS events to internal and external audiences. Maintain an internal planning calendar of upcoming climate- and sustainability-related events. Share OCS events calendar with University Communications for long-term communications planning. 20%
  • Maintain and update a robust web and engaging social media presence that showcases the breadth and depth of the Climate Commitment (climate.duke.edu), represents Duke’s climate and sustainability research in the past, present, and future, and offers points of engagement for all main audience sectors: alumni and donors, prospective and current students, faculty, staff, media, and community members. Use Canva or other applications/tools to create graphics, web updates, newsletters, social posts, etc. for activities and content strategies in support of climate goals. 25%
  • Assist the Director of Marketing and Communications for OCS in organizing and preparing for Climate Communications Subcommittee meetings (made up of communications stakeholders from across the university), assist in supporting the Climate Commitment Advisory Council (CCAC), and coordinate with colleagues in Alumni Engagement and Development as climate becomes a funding priority in the upcoming Duke fundraising campaign. 20%

 

 

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Work requires the ability to perform news and featuring writing using journalism and investigative writing skills and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline. Project management skills and some social media and audio/visual editing skills preferred. Experience or facility for content management systems, such as Drupal and WordPress.

Experience
Work requires one year of directly related writing experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum one year experience in strategic communications, marketing or a related field.
Superior writing, editing and content creation skills.
