Occ Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient car e support partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practica l Nurse (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA pro videsdirect care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care uni t coordination. Theindividual in this position is expected to perform ba siccare andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient po pulationneeds in the assigned work area. In addition, the NA is expected toassist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. This individual is expected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy of every patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpati entcare. They are expected to knowand adhere to all basic policiesand p rocedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.They are expected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral uni tupkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed, with or without direct supervision. The NA isexpected to use accurate ve rbal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.Perform tasks within the scope of a Nurs ing Care Assistant I and II asdefined by the NC Board of Nursing.
Work Performed
Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovide manual assistance as required.Obtain andr ecord patient data for medical records noting and informingRN/LPN of inf ormation collected.Administer treatment and personal care procedures top atients including,but not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, chang ing clothing, nailcare, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas,sk in care, andbowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as requiredto meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.P articipate in teaching activities by reinforcing teaching instructedbyRN and/or providers as needed.Assist providers and nurses with physicalexa minations by helpingposition patients, changing non-sterile dressingand weighing patients.Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and applyice bags. Note andreport any changes in patient's condition. Turn and positi on patients,set up and feed patientsas necessary, provide patientswith freshdrinking water.Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriatetraining, document and notify RN/LPN.Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Followstandard precautions an d use personal protective equipment as required.Collect, deliver and con duct routine tests on patient specimens. Cleanassigned area; stockand re plenish supplies and equipment as required.Participate in ownprofessiona l development by maintaining requiredskills validation and attending edu cational offerings. Support thedevelopment of other staff andformal lear ners.May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over48 hours old. Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.In addi tion to the NCA I duties outlined, the following duties maybeperformed: sterile dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old andwound irrigation ; IV fluid assistance activities; oral/nasogastricfeeding;urinarycathete rization and irrigation; oxygen therapy,including room set-up and monito ring flow-rate; break up and removal offecal impaction;oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning;tracheotomy care; ostomy care and irrigation. These additional skillswill require competency validation on hire as we ll as annual competencyvalidation.
Knowledge, Skillsand Abil ities
Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedu res that areapplicable to work performed.Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working knowledge of principles and practices of providingno nprofessional bedside patient care.Working knowledge of sanitation, pers onal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicableto work in a hospital.Working knowledge of infection control proceduresand safetyp recautions.Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.This posi tion is very active and requires standing, walking,bending,kneeling, sto oping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Theemployeemust frequen tly lift or move objects and patients weighing over35 poundswith assista nce or appropriate lift equipment.Ability to understand andfollow oral a nd written instructions.Ability to document andcommunicatepertinent info rmation using computerand/or paper documentationtools.Ability to establ ish and maintain effective working relationships withpatients and hospit al staff.Working knowledge of the organizationand physical layout of the hospital.Pre-employment Physical CapacityTesting may berequired.
