Summary

The Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (CVIS) will utilize professional cardiovascular theory, technology and processes to implement direct patient care on pediatric and adult congenital patients that require diagnostic or therapeutic procedures within the cardiovascular service. Demonstrates role-specific competence and assists physicians in diagnosing and treating all pediatric and adult congenital cardiac disease and cardiac arrhythmias in the Cath Lab, EP Lab, and Hybrid OR specializing in the care of patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional heart catheterizations, electrophysiology studies, cardiac ablations, and implantation of EP devices.

This position is eligible for $10,000 sign on bonus (must be new to Duke). Relocation Assistance also available.

Work Schedule: 

Days 4-10’s, with on-call requirement. The lab is closed on Duke recognized holidays.

Work Performed

Assist the physician during invasive and noninvasive procedures to treat congenital cardiac disease and cardiac arrhythmias. Maintain high standards to achieve quality patient care. Communicate continuously with the physician about the patient's condition.

May perform any of the following: diagnostic catheterization procedures on all pediatric patients and adult patients with known and suspected congenital cardiac disease. Interventional procedures, which may include any of the following: intracardiac prep and placement of stents, balloon angioplasty, septal device closure, ductal device closure, and transvenous pulmonary valve placement. EP procedures may include any of the following; EP studies, implantation of pacemaker, ICD, and cardiac ablations.

Procedural requirements: Room preparation, breakdown including but not limited to, radiographic, hemodynamic, and computer setup, stocking rooms and room cleanup. Prepare sterile field appropriately for specified procedure type. Evaluate the status of the patient during the procedure; provide age and gender specific care, prep access site according to lab standard practice, and perform EKG lead placement, blood pressure and pulse oximetry setup for hemodynamic monitoring.

Acquire and accurately document pertinent patient data in the electronic health record and enter into hemodynamic and X-ray systems. Operate all physiologic and radiographic equipment safety and correctly. Assess procedure room for equipment functioning and readiness. Obtain supplies for individual cases and ensure all appropriate needs of the Cath Lab/EP Lab team are met. Observe occupational and radiation safety regulations (wearing dosimeter badges, lead aprons, goggles). Educate the patient of procedure expectations before, during, and after the procedure including post-procedural limitations and restrictions. Participate in performance improvement activities.

Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.

Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.

Working knowledge and completion of appropriate JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

A graduate of an associate or baccalaureate academic program in health science (including, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology or respiratory therapy)

Or

A graduate of an associate or baccalaureate academic program in an unrelated field along with graduation from a certificate program in cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiology technology or respiratory.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

RCIS, RCES, ARRT - RTR, ARRT - Radiography (R), ARRT - Cardiac Interventional Radiography (CI) , ARRT - Cardiovascular Interventional Radiography (CV), ARRT - Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI), or IBHRE certification within 36 months of employment.

Basic Life Support Certification required.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification required within 6 months of employment (Adult Cath, Adult EP, & Hybrid OR only).
