Our Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories are College of American Pathologist (CAP) accredited, CLIA certified, state of the art, multidisciplinary labs. Clinical Labs span three hospitals (Duke University, Duke Regional and Duke Raleigh Hospitals) and include over 40 different specialized work centers, a large point of care testing program and phlebotomy across all of Duke Health. The laboratories employ a wide range of practices; from high-throughput, highly automated testing in our hematology, chemistry and immunoassay laboratories, to specialized mass spectrometry and molecular based testing in many of our subspecialty labs, to direct patient care by our transfusion services physicians. MEDICAL LAB SCIENTISTS

General Description:

The medical lab scientist performs a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Job duties are dependent on the laboratory and may be composed of a combination of the following duties and responsibilities related to the specialization.

Tasks are performed according to written procedures and policies with careful monitoring of quality control and quality assurance practices. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

BS degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Biological Science or related field is required. Generalist certification required for General labs. Generalist/Specialty certification required for specialty labs.

Experience

None required

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Registry eligible. Generalist/Specialty Certification by a nationally recognized board/agency (required within 18 months of hire). Certification will vary depending on laboratory. Advanced degree (MS or higher) accepted in lieu of certification.

 

HISTOLOGY TECHS

General Description: 

The histology tech performs routine histopathological tests in a clinical laboratory for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in histological laboratory skills.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks on routine and special material.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

BS/BA preferred. Registered or registry eligible as Histology Technician ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology).

Experience

One year experience with BS/BA or AS/AA. No experience needed for NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) Program.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

 Registered or registry eligible as Histology Technician ASCP

 

MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN         

General Description:

The medical lab technician coordinates and participates in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

AA, AS or AD Degree, BS Degree.

Experience

 MLT with >= 4 years of experience. Non-Cert Medical technologist (meeting CLIA requirements).

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

 Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a nationally recognized board/agency (required).
