Occ Summary
The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as anintegral member of theinterdisciplinary healthcare team in providing d irect patient care. TheMedical Assistant, Certified performs routine adm inistrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment ofpatients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.
Work Performed
Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medi cal histories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to p atients, and prepares patients for examinationsand procedures.Patient ca resupport responsibilities may include assisting the medicaland nursing staff during examination and procedures, collecting andpreparing laborat ory specimens, performing basic laboratory test in theclinic/office, tak ing electrocardiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and n on-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstanding of the educa tional content and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenti ng in the patient record.Other clinical support responsibilities include disposing ofcontaminated supplies, instrument processing, high level dis infectionand sterilization of medical instruments, telephoning prescript ions to apharmacy, preparing and administering medications as directed b y aphysician, and authorizing drug refills as directed. Performs othercl inical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician.Administrative responsibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers telephones, sched ules appointments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroCare, checkout patients, andreferral scheduling; arranges for hospital admissions andla boratoryservices, updates and filespatient medical records, fills outin suranceforms, handles billing, bookkeeping to include receiving copays a ndcollections on account balances; correspondence, and ordering clinical and clerical supplies and forms. Performs other administrative dutiesasd irected.May be requested to be a liaison for clinic activities suchas Jo intCommission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees.
