The Duke Molecular Physiology Institute (DMPI), a part of Duke University Medical Center, occupies a place of national and international leadership in the fight against major diseases.  Our mission is to produce integrated multi-omics and physiologic profiles of chronic human diseases, and to use such profiles to develop new disease detection strategies, novel therapies, and insights into disease mechanisms.

We are seeking a highly motivated Biostatistician to join a collaborative and innovative research team supporting cutting-edge projects in human genetics, genomics, and multi-omics. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact biomedical research that has direct impact on health, across a diverse portfolio of studies while working closely with investigators, statisticians, programmers, and interdisciplinary collaborators.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate degree (PhD or Master’s degree) in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related quantitative field OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience contributing to statistical analyses for research studies.
  • Working knowledge of R, SAS, and/or Linux/Unix environments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative abilities.

Position Description:

The team member will play an integral role in the design, analysis, and interpretation of complex biomedical data. With appropriate mentorship and guidance, the analyst will support projects from initial concept through publication, contributing to statistical planning, programming, and dissemination of results.

This role is ideal for candidates who are intellectually curious, detail-oriented, and eager to grow their expertise in modern statistical methods within a dynamic academic research environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and format datasets for analysis across a variety of genetics, genomics, and omics-focused research projects.
  • Genomic alignment and variant curation.
  • Maintain and curate project databases in collaboration with team members.
  • Develop statistical analysis plans and independently perform descriptive analyses, basic statistical testing, and modeling.
  • Write code (e.g., R, SAS) to design analytic datasets, validate outputs, identify errors, and ensure data integrity.
  • Perform advanced programming tasks such as data transposition and macro development.
  • Learn and apply new statistical methodologies as project needs evolve.
  • Document analytic processes and generate clear summaries of findings for investigators and collaborators.
  • Present results in written and verbal formats to a variety of audiences and collaborators.
  • Contribute to manuscript and grant development, including drafting statistical methods sections with guidance from senior statisticians.
  • Participate in project meetings, provide analytic insight, and help identify next steps for ongoing work.
  • Collaborate effectively with programmers, statisticians, and investigators to ensure accurate and unbiased interpretation of results.
  • Develop project timelines, forecast analytic effort, and manage responsibilities across multiple concurrent studies.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional standards, statistical best practices, and sponsor guidelines (e.g., NIH).
  • Handle confidential research data with the highest level of professionalism and security.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $80,548.00 to USD $130,120.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
