As the Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS), you will provide strategic and operational leadership for the university’s undergraduate student community standards process. The position oversees the fair, equitable, and legally sound administration of conduct processes involving undergraduate students and collaborates with graduate and professional schools regarding matters within their respective jurisdictions. The Associate Dean/Director provides consultation, direction, and support to staff and hearing officers; serves as a hearing officer and hearing-panel facilitator; responsible for the recruitment and development of conduct-board members; contributes to university policy development; and promotes education regarding student rights, responsibilities, and community standards. This position works closely with the Office for Institutional Equity, Office of General Counsel, graduate and professional schools, faculty and academic units, residential life, campus safety, counseling and health services, and other university partners. The position also participates in student crisis response and a rotating 24-hour dean-on-call schedule. All candidates must submit a cover letter with the application. What You'll Do
Lead Student Conduct and Community Standards Programs
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of Duke University's undergraduate student conduct system.
- Ensure conduct processes are administered consistently, equitably, and in compliance with institutional policies and applicable laws, including Title IX, FERPA, and the Clery Act.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of student and organizational conduct matters, from intake and investigation through resolution and case closure.
- Serve as a hearing officer and facilitate conduct hearing panels involving faculty, staff, and student representatives.
- Prepare comprehensive written decisions, reports, and communications related to conduct proceedings.
- Advance educational and restorative approaches to conflict resolution, accountability, and student learning.
- Maintain accurate and confidential conduct records using university case management systems.
Lead and Develop High-Performing Teams
- Provide leadership, coaching, consultation, and support to Associate and Assistant Deans, hearing officers, and conduct board members.
- Recruit, train, and develop members of the Student Conduct Board and Appellate Board.
- Oversee hearing panel assignments and administrative processes that support effective case management.
- Coordinate and support the Honor Council and other OSCCS-affiliated programs and initiatives.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous learning, and excellence within the office.
Shape University Policy and Strategy
- Partner with university leaders and campus stakeholders to review, develop, and implement conduct policies and procedures.
- Contribute to strategic planning, assessment, budgeting, and continuous improvement efforts for OSCCS.
- Promote consistent application of policies across student populations, organizations, and academic units.
- Collaborate closely with Institutional Equity, General Counsel, Residential Life, Campus Safety, Counseling and Health Services, and academic partners.
Drive Assessment, Education, and Campus Engagement
- Analyze conduct trends and data to support institutional decision-making and risk management.
- Develop assessment strategies and student learning outcomes that measure program impact and effectiveness.
- Design and deliver educational initiatives focused on community standards, ethical decision-making, academic integrity, and student responsibility.
- Represent OSCCS on university committees, professional organizations, and campus-wide initiatives.
- Serve as a trusted resource for students, faculty, staff, and campus leaders regarding conduct processes and community expectations.
Support Students During Critical Moments
- Participate in student crisis response efforts.
- Serve in a rotating 24-hour Dean-on-Call schedule.
- Help students navigate challenging situations with professionalism, fairness, empathy, and sound judgment.

Required Qualifications
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Required Minimum Education:
- Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
- Required Minimum Experience
- Work generally requires six years’ experience student personnel/services, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to manage a major program area within student affairs. OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
Strongly Preferred Education:
- Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, education, counseling, social sciences, law, public administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Strongly Preferred Experiences:
- At least six years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, student conduct, student affairs, investigations, conflict resolution, compliance, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience administering or overseeing student conduct, academic integrity, alternative-resolution, restorative, or comparable institutional processes.
- Experience facilitating hearings, interpreting policy, preparing written decisions or reports, and communicating sensitive information.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or providing professional consultation to staff or hearing-board members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, manage competing priorities, and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Experience developing or revising institutional policies, procedures, or governance materials.
- Experience responding to complex student matters, including behavioral concerns, crisis situations, or risk assessments.
- Experience using case-management systems, analyzing conduct data, or conducting program assessment.
- Experience working in a complex residential college or research-university environment.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $68,179.00 to USD $125,438.00.
