Positional Summary

As a member of the Student Involvement and Leadership team, serve as the Assistant Director providing leadership and direction for student programming. Serve as a direct advisor to Duke University Union, which includes assistance in strategic planning, self-governance, leadership development, and programming, as well as negotiating and executing contracts. Responsible for delivering on the vision of involvement as leadership and ensure all students have a valuable and significant involvement experience at Duke. Coordinate large-scale University programs and events such as In The Spotlight, including office’s contributions to collaborative events (e.g. Bricks to Stone, Welcome Back Bash, etc.). Ensure effective planning, collaboration, risk management, and execution of major program board events including Last Day of Classes, Heatwave Concert, and P-Checks Concert. Provide direct support to student organization systems through management of Duke Groups platform. Oversee student use of programming budget and various endowment accounts. Supervise programming student staff, managing scheduling and student timecards. Supervise a Graduate Assistant(s) who will assist with advising and supporting students and student organizations on self-governance, risk management, and event planning. Serve as a member of the Student Involvement and Leadership team to advance co-curricular initiatives focused on belonging, engagement, and well-being.

 

Key Position Duties

Student Programming Advising (45%)

  • Advise large-scale student event coordinating organization, Duke University Union.
  • Attend regular meetings and events.
  • Train students on programming procedures, facility usage, contracting and negotiations, team building, publicity, needs assessment, evaluation, recruitment, and retention of their respective organizations.
  • Provide a holistic approach to the coordination, implementation, assessment and evaluation of programmatic efforts and creating synergistic efforts in relation to student involvement and leadership, specifically in support of Duke’s new QuadEx initiative.
  • Help support the implementation of university-wide programming and leadership curriculum.

Supervision & Budget Management (15%)

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, direct training, and evaluation and performance management for a Graduate Assistant(s).
  • Oversee budget for area of responsibility and manage appropriate expenditures in accordance to University and Campus Life policies.
  • Effectively communicate with students about budget management, policies, and responsible student fee usage.

Student Organization Support (15%)

  • Responsible for management, updates, and troubleshooting of Duke Groups platform (Campus Groups). Ensuring event registration, student organization pages, and other administrative functions work effectively.
  • Develop and deliver trainings for students and staff on how to use Duke Groups platform effectively.

Departmental Assessment Support (10%)

  • Support the Student Involvement and Leadership’s assessment efforts, including managing and organizing data, design and distribute assessment measures to address intended program outcomes, and create assessment reports that translate collected data into narratives to share with stakeholders.

Departmental Support and Collaborative Relationships (10%)

  • Serve as part of the greater Campus Life team, offering opportunities for connection related to student organization support, large-scale programming, event management and logistics, and leadership development.
  • Support office and departmental programs as an additional event support member at evening and weekend programming.
  • Initiate and develop key collaborative relationships across the Division of Student Affairs and within the University community. Assist students in creating meaningful partnerships and relationships with other students, staff and the Durham community through reciprocal participation in programs and events.

Other Duties (5%)

  • Perform other duties as assigned, including executing administrative projects, team assignments, and committee work.

 

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies

Preferred Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field of study.
  • Work generally preferred is a minimum of one year of experience in student organization management, student advising and governance, leadership development, fraternity/sorority life, and program planning at the undergraduate and/or graduate level(s).
  • Must be familiar with student advising and event management work, interest & knowledge in student governance, social identity development and its relation to the college student experience.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $47,000 to USD $74,500.  Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience
