Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) supports a flexible work environment by offering on-site (in office 5 days a week), hybrid (in office a minimum of 2 days a week or defined by manager), remote (work off-site 5 days a week), and flexible start and end time work arrangements. All team members must reside within a 50-mile radius of our downtown Durham office.
If working a hybrid or remote schedule, individuals must have access to and maintain a secure home office environment with high-speed internet service and work collaboratively with others using a variety of technologies and tools. With approval from their manager, staff members may work a flexible schedule in terms of start/end times, while working within DHDAA’s core work hours between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (eastern standard). At the discretion of Managers and/or Senior Leadership, staff working a hybrid, remote or flex schedule may be required to be in the office on days and/or times outside of the agreed upon schedule.

The Assistant Director, Digital Acquisition supports the growing needs of digital engagement and fundraising strategies across the School of Medicine (SOM) and Duke University Health System (DUHS).
This position will focus on grateful patient cultivation through strategic digital content creation and implementing digital-first fundraising strategies to significantly enhance donor engagement, broaden outreach, and increase pipeline opportunities. The development of targeted email cultivation journeys within a grateful patient digital platform will foster deeper, more personalized donor relationships, leading to improved retention and increased giving.
This role will also enable real-time performance tracking and continuous refinement of engagement strategies, ensuring maximum impact.
This position will report to the Senior Director, Grateful Patient Giving Programs.
As a member of the Annual Giving & Grateful Patient Programs team, the Assistant Director will assist in developing patient-centric giving programs with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of donors and dollars raised for SOM and DUHS.
Work Arrangement – Hybrid - This is not a remote position. This position is full-time located in Durham, NC.
Anticipated Pay Range - Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $61,535.00 to USD $95,880.00. DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES/SKILLS
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with developing communication journeys including mail, email, text, social, and other digital platforms.
- Understanding of fundraising databases and tracking mechanisms.
- Experience working in email, text, and web giving platforms strongly preferred.
- HTML and CSS experience a plus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training - Work requires the skills and knowledge normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree.
Experience - 3 years progressive fundraising/customer relations/marketing or sales and promotions experience in team environment.
Proven verbal and written communication skills and computer experience with Windows environment.
Occasional travel required.

Work Performed
Program Management (45%)
Using proven and innovative techniques, execute a patient-centered approach to increase philanthropic support, visibility, and importance among the Duke Health patient population. Establish a digital-first fundraising strategy for acquiring grateful patients.
- Oversee the development and implementation of print and digital communications in coordination with internal partners and external vendors.
- Generate solicitation content for mail, email, text, websites, and social media channels.
- In coordination with the DUHS Marketing team, encourage proper use of the Duke Health brand and helps integrate key messaging.
- Encourage strategic use of donor and patient stories in all communications to share compelling messaging to support the mission while ensuring HIPAA standards are met.
- Coordinate with gift officers to facilitate outreach to grateful patients based on responses through the digital platform.
- Assist departmental leadership in determining feasibility and funding strategies for new and ongoing programs.
- Plan and establish goals to align with the direction and overall objectives.
Strategic Initiatives (35%)
Enhance grateful patient acquisition through personalized and consistent outreach utilizing healthcare philanthropy best practices and innovative strategies.
- Support Honor Your Caregiver program through digital platform development including webpage management, email cultivation journeys, and e-newsletters.
- Coordinate with Data Analytics Specialist to manage grateful patient segmentation.
- Develop innovative techniques to inspire grateful patient engagement, including DIY and honor/memorial peer-to-peer fundraising.
Administrative (20%)
- Use data metrics to measure the effectiveness of digital acquisition efforts, including dollars raised, response rates, click-through rates, and return on investment.
- Maintain effective tracking, acknowledgement, and follow-up on all grateful patient gifts.
- Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.
