Occupational Summary

Supports the administration of institutional risk and insurance functions by coordinating operational activities, managing insurance coverage processes, and providing technical guidance across departments. Oversees implementation of core risk initiatives and manages insurance data, applications, and vendor relationships to ensure continuity and coverage integrity.

 

Work Performed

  • Administer the day-to-day functions of the University’s insurance programs, including maintenance of coverage schedules, policy documentation, renewal submissions, and certificate issuance.
  • Collect, review, and interpret exposure data from Duke University and Duke University Health System to support underwriting activities and insurance procurement.
  • Coordinate application submissions, policy endorsements, and renewal requests with insurance brokers and underwriters; compile and validate information used for premium calculations.
  • Recommend insurance program structures and limits based on data analysis and exposure trends; communicate findings and options with leadership.
  • Manage broker, carrier, and vendor performance for accuracy, responsiveness, and service quality; escalate issues when needed.
  • Oversee assigned property, liability, and auto claims processes, including information gathering, documentation, and authority-based resolution in consultation with internal or external parties.
  • Negotiates settlement of claims within authority.
  • Develop and present loss trend reports, funding models, and incident summaries; apply historical and forecasted data to support program decisions.
  • Assists the Sr. Assoc. Dir. in the implementation of departmental projects related to insurance operations, vendor transitions, and coverage evaluations.
  • Provide guidance on insurance-related contract terms and procurement requirements; collaborate with legal, purchasing, and departmental staff to improve consistency and compliance.
  • Conduct reviews of contract language and insurance exhibits for risk implications; make recommendations to mitigate adverse terms.
  • Deliver risk-related education and training to departmental stakeholders; develop presentation materials and reference tools as needed.
  • Represent the Corporate Risk Management office on institutional working groups and committees as assigned.
  • Supervise assigned staff and coordinate daily workflows, training, and performance monitoring in support of insurance operations.

Education/Training

Work requires excellent oral and written communication skills and analytical skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. CPCU or ARM certification is highly desirable.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 10 years of progressive risk management experience in higher education, or practical risk management experience in another industry in an organization with large and diverse risk profiles or equivalent insurance company or insurance broker experience. 3-5 years supervisory experience is desirable. Ability to work independently and handle competing demands while navigating a complex organization with a diverse population and decentralized culture.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $89,877.00 to USD $179,754.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
