Scope of Responsibilities. 

The Assistant Director is responsible for general programming, marketing, and communications for Muslim Life at Duke. The Assistant Director advises affiliated student groups, develops and promotes collaborative programming initiatives with Student Affairs units, academic departments, and other university units, and manages all marketing and communications, including correspondence and trainings with other university units. The Assistant Director assists the Director in executing the Center for Muslim Life’s strategic plan and responding to the spiritual, cultural, academic, and social needs of diverse Muslim students at Duke. 

 

Duties

35%

  • Plans and implements programs in consultation with the Muslim Chaplain that support Muslim students, including but not limited to: Jumu’ah (Friday prayer), KitabConnect (Qur’an Study Circle), Ramadan, Eid, and other cultural, spiritual and recreational events. 
  • Leads and develops collaborative programming with other university units including, but not limited to, identity and cultural centers and Student Affairs Units.  
  • Creates and strategizes program management procedures that promote a culture of transparency and accountability among CML staff. 
  • Measures and assesses the impact of CML programming in accordance with the department’s strategic outcomes and in consultation with the Muslim Chaplain.

  • Creates and manages marketing and communications materials including website, listserv, print advertisements, and social media. Ensures proper photographic, audio and video (if needed) documentation of events. Adheres to Division and University marketing and communications standards. 
  • Develops and disseminates various Muslim-based resources such as publications and exhibits, and resource guides.  
  • Builds relationships and liaisons with Student Affairs units, academic departments, and other university units to create an inclusive community for all students

  • Supports, advises and advocates for various Muslim student groups and associations. 
  • Provides consultation on an individual basis and provides on-going advocacy for cultural communities to support their spiritual, academic, social and personal experience. 
  • Supervises two student employees (one undergraduate student and one graduate/professional student)

  • Designs trainings, including curriculum development and implementation to help others on campus (including university faculty and staff) to better meet the needs of Muslim population at Duke.    
  • Develop, implement and support community-building initiatives and other opportunities that build relationships that sustain student engagement

General Qualifications  

  • Minimum of two years of experience in program administration in an academic or counseling setting 
  • Strong knowledge of Muslim culture and traditions   
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office, Canva, and familiarity with social media for communication with students   
  • Knowledge of and experience working with individuals from diverse national origins; preference is given for fluency in another language other than English 

  

Additional Job Specific Skills and Competencies   

  • Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse Muslim population at Duke University  
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects/priorities and meet deadlines under pressure  
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal skills as well as proven ability to work in a team environment.  
  • Preferred experience in photography and video production, marketing, and program coordination 

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires two years experience in personnel, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
