Nature of Responsibilities:

Serve as a leader in the office’s administration of the university’s disciplinary process for all alleged undergraduate misconduct and for graduate/professional students for matters that arise under the Policy on Prohibited, Discrimination, Harassment and Related Misconduct (PPDHRM). Receive complaints, provide support and outreach to students, implement interim measures, conduct investigations, collect, evaluate and weigh information regarding alleged misconduct, conduct hearings, and issue educational outcomes and conduct statuses as appropriate. Educate and train the campus community about university policy and procedures, including members of the Conduct Board, Community Standard Advisors. Provide oversight, project supervision and guidance to student employees.  Maintain administrative notes and records in data management software in compliance with OSCCS and university policies. Participate in the institution’s 24/7 crisis response on-call system.  Attend regularly scheduled meetings and trainings. Serve as liaison to one of the office’s major areas and/or partnerships (academic, non-academic, organizational, Alcohol & Other Drug, Housing & Residence Life, Off-Campus and Community Life, DUPD/Clery Compliance, etc).  Assist in assessment of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standard’s learning outcomes, including evaluation of emerging best practices.

 

Duties:

Student Conduct Case Management (65%)

  • Assist in the review of incoming incident reports, complainants and investigate allegations of policy violations
  • Serve as a hearing officer for administrative resolution of cases of student and group/organization misconduct; mediate cases involving student conflict
  • Facilitate adaptable resolutions including, but not limited to resolutions through agreement, Faculty-Student Resolutions, Restorative resolutions, and more
  • Determine responsibility for allegations of policy violation(s); issue university-level outcomes and conduct statuses as appropriate (up to and including suspension and/or expulsion)
  • Schedule, prepare and facilitate convening of the Conduct Board including preparing information/evidence for inclusion in hearing packet materials for cases that proceed to the Conduct Board
  • Draft and send administrative letters, mark outcomes complete, close cases, and enter records in data management system
  • Monitor completion of outcomes issued through the conduct process
  • Counsel students in academic, personal, and disciplinary matters; assess students for additional intervention and referral to appropriate resources(e.g., DuWell, DukeReach)
  • Evaluate emerging practices for possible implementation in the University’s conduct process (e.g., restorative justice)

 

Administrative Duties (20%)

  • Aid in the development and coordination of training for paraprofessional staff
  • Aid in collection and preparation of data for office assessment efforts in accordance with OSCCS and Divisional standards Communicate to internal and external constituencies
  • Develop and facilitate education and outreach initiatives for campus community including student populations, faculty, and staff
  • Support university officials in collecting federally-required information

 

Assistant Dean Campus Leadership Duties (10%)

  • Represent OSCCS and provide leadership on behalf of Dean of Students’ to key constituencies regarding shared concerns (e.g., Duke University Police Department, Durham Police Department, Academic Deans, Faculty, Directors of Undergraduate Studies, Housing and Residence Life, DuWell, DukeReach, Behavioral Assessment Team, Student Involvement and Leadership, local neighborhood associations)
  • Serve as “dean on-call” in 24-hour emergency on-call rotation; respond to crises involving students; assist in development of protocols
  • Provide outreach to university offices regarding office policy and procedures and university protocols
  • Provide ongoing training of policies and procedures to faculty, staff, and students in university offices and schools
  • Support the Duke community by attending events that may involve student demonstrations and protests

 

Other Duties (5%)

  • Assist in the review and development of university policies related to student conduct
  • Assist in the editing of office publications, including the OSCCS website and The Duke Community Standard in Practice: A Guide for Students
  • Work with University Counsel and outside counsel in responding to claims filed against Duke; testify as needed in depositions or court
  • Advise and support OSCCS student groups such as Conduct Interns, Honors Council, Student Advisory Groups, etc
  • Other related duties as assigned incidental to the nature of the position or appropriate to the missions of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Dean of Students Office, the Division of Student Affairs, and the university

 

Required Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in higher education/student services, counseling, or related area. Three (3) years (post- master’s degree) of relevant experience in a higher education or related setting.

Background in advising/counseling students and prior work administering student conduct processes preferred

 

Job Specific Skills and Competencies:

 Excellent verbal and written communication skills, critical-thinking skills, use of sound judgment  Knowledge of university disciplinary systems and relevant legal issues

 Commitment as a hearing officer to an unbiased/neutral perspective until evidence supports an opinion

 Strong attention to accuracy and detail

 Proficiency with Mac platform and Microsoft Office applications; experience with conduct database management systems (i.e., Maxient) strongly preferred

 Ability to strategically and sensitively ask questions, evaluate responses, weigh information, and determine responsibility, with an eye toward maximizing educational opportunities consistent with university philosophy

 Skills relevant to establishing and maintaining successful partnerships with alumni, parents, faculty/staff, administration, members of the community, and other stakeholders

 Ability to interpret data, distinguish nuances, and evaluate multiple course of action

 Ability to take initiative, balance multiple projects, set priorities, and work autonomously yet also as a member of a team

 Ability to communicate difficult/sensitive information

 Ability to effectively testify in court or other legal proceedings

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

 

Education

Work requires a Master's degree in higher education/student services, counseling, or related area.

 

Experience

 

Three (3) years (post-master's degree) of relevant experience in a OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE higher education or related setting. Background in advising/counseling students and prior work administering judicial processes preferred.
