Primary Role

 

The Application Systems Analyst II plans and executes application builds, software deployment and in-lab hardware implementation for laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and will assist the Business Intelligence Manager with the creation and maintenance of interactive visual dashboards.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate design, implementation and maintenance of databases, data marts, data warehouses and business intelligence dashboards and reports for the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) to include executive leadership, financial, human resource, facilities, project management and operational record databases. 
  • Perform encoding, testing, and debugging, as necessary to meet project specific goals 
  • Assist with the analysis of requirements, design, document, and test new applications as well as maintain and support existing applications. 
  • Collaborate with research project teams, application programmers, and data managers to plan, design, and implement research information systems. 
  • Lead the project implementation and testing of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and workflow management systems. 
  • Plan, lead, and facilitate both regular cross-functional project team meetings and external meetings with LIMS stakeholders, vendors and collaborators. Document meeting notes, capture tasks, store project artifacts and track progress in Microsoft Teams 
  • Assess user requirements/needs to provide application support, including evaluation of opportunities to include new experimental platforms and technologies. 
  • Act as the focal point for communicating system problems identified in department-wide testing to the application developers, then works with the application developers to address issues identified during application testing and communicate required changes, fixes, and updates. 
  • Produce detailed project proposals, including scope, pricing and schedules for proposed information system projects. 
  • Work collaboratively to liaise with departmental leadership and peers within DHTS and Duke OIT to design, develop, build, test and maintain the hardware and software infrastructure which the DHVI business intelligence platform will reside upon. Participate in technical committees and task forces. 
  • Assess and analyze, any risks and issues that may compromise project team performance and results and develop plans to remove or mitigate them. Diligently track risks and issues in Microsoft Teams along with their respective mitigation and resolution steps. 
  • Manage the release and update process of the application which includes effective end-user communication. Document change management details in ServiceNow. 
  • Identify changes in work scope and ensure appropriate planning measures are taken with internal and external stakeholders to reassess, renegotiate, forecast, and amend scope of work responsibilities, proposals, staffing levels, resources, and budgets. 
  • Software project management – develop a schedule and manage the technical components of the project in accordance with design and build, technical partners and vendors.   
  • Technical analysis – learn, understand, and document all technical aspects of the project in accordance with GMP Validation requirements and other lab-specific requirements.
  • Generate documentation in accordance with DHVI and GMP practices for all technical related aspects of the implementation including but not limited to Technical Design Specification.  

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management or related field (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience). 

 

Required:

  • 2 years’ experience in developing visualization dashboards using Tableau or Power BI. 
  • Ability to work successfully on multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Experience applying process standards.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of the research and applications development project teams. 

 

Preferred Experience:

 

  • 5 years’ experience in the implementation and operation of a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), Electronic Laboratory Notebook, LIMS installation in an Academic infrastructure.
  • Functional knowledge working in a GMP environment and general lab environment.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
  • Project management experience, specifically with service and project management tools (i.e. ServiceNow, Microsoft Project). 
  • Experience with Electronic Lab Notebooks, LIMS installation and operation.
  • Experience in customer consulting, team player, oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting.
  • AWS/Azure knowledge and/or certification.
  • Experience with Process mapping/design software (such as Visio). 
  • Knowledge of BI and analytics, and experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders. 
  • SQL / TSQL (Queries, Views, Stored Procedures, Functions, Triggers).
  • ETL (Extract, Transform and Load).
  • Data Mapping & Modeling.
  • SAP Business Objects, Cognos SQL, Crystal Reports, SSRS, Power BI, Tableau or similar Business Intelligence (Bl) dashboard and report writing tools.
