From the beginning, the museum has been dedicated to building a groundbreaking collection of contemporary art, emphasizing works by historically underrepresented artists.

 

Position Description:

The Nasher Museum seeks a detail-oriented and proactive Accounting Specialist to support our finance operations. This part-time role is responsible for processing invoices, preparing and running financial reports, tracking expenses and budgets, and assisting with grant reconciliation. The ideal candidate will bring strong organizational skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to communicate effectively across teams to ensure accuracy and timeliness in financial processes. This position requires a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and initiative in managing tasks and identifying potential issues before they arise.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Processing and Reporting – 75%

  • Perform complex accounting tasks, including processing invoices, purchase orders, expense transfers, and billing
  • Reconcile accounts on a monthly basis and prepare detailed financial statements and reports for museum departments
  • Analyze financial data to disseminate and maintain accurate financial records

 

Budgeting and Grant Reconciliation – 10%

  • Prepare templates for annual budget process
  • Assist in developing and reconciling financial reports for grants and sponsored projects
  • Track expenditures, monitor grant compliance, and maintain records

 

Communication and Coordination – 15%

  • Proactively communicate with museum staff about financial and grant activities
  • Respond to accounting inquiries and implement procedures to streamline financial processes

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $18.00 to USD $26.62. Required Qualifications at this Level:

Education/Training

  • Work requires knowledge of general accounting principles usually through two years post-secondary education in accounting or a related business field.

Experience

  • Work generally requires 3 years of experience in an accounting setting to become familiar with the accepted accounting practices involved in maintaining more complex financial records, reconciling accounting information and preparing financial statements. OR AND EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

  • Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with SAP (or similar financial software)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and time management skills
