Occupational Summary
The Office the Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University seeks an experienced Director of Engagement to oversee all areas of engagement for the office (aka Duke Arts). The successful candidate will be a seasoned professional with a proven track record of developing and implementing innovative and effective engagement strategies that are like, and align with, the mission and vision of the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts and its goals of broad and deep multi-layered community engagement. Focusing on community, the Director of Engagement will be responsible for establishing and maintaining impactful relationships with local, state, regional and national communities, including schools and universities, arts organizations and arts leaders. In consultation with the Vice Provost, the Director will be responsible for creating and implementing the overall engagement strategy of Duke Arts, ensuring that our efforts are strategic, consistent, and impactful. The Director reports to the Vice Provost for the Arts and will supervise the team of Engagement Managers.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategy Development and Implementation (40%):
- Develop and execute a comprehensive engagement strategy to enhance the presence and impact of Duke Arts in all parts of our community.
- Identify and prioritize engagement opportunities to support the goals and objectives of Duke Arts.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to align engagement efforts with broader university initiatives.
- Collaborate with the cabinet members of the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts to develop strategies that promote and align with the Duke Arts mission, vision and goals.
2. Stakeholder Relationship Management (30%):
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with community entities beyond campus borders including but not limited to schools, universities, arts organizations, and arts leaders to establish partnerships and to cultivate collaborative opportunities.
- Represent the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts at community events, meetings, conferences and other venues and in professional and networking settings to enhance the office’s profile and continue to forge strategic partnerships.
- Act as a liaison between Duke Arts and external stakeholders.
- Identify and leverage opportunities to engage diverse communities and promote inclusivity in all the arts.
3. Team Supervision and Development (20%):
- Supervise and provide strong leadership and guidance to the Campus Engagement Manager, Student Engagement Manager, Alumni Engagement Manager, and Visual and Studio Art Manager to ensure their individual success and the success of the unit.
- Support the professional growth of direct reports through mentorship, training, and performance feedback. In consultation with the Vice Provost, the Director will guide the strategies of each engagement teammate and direct their work accordingly.
- Ensure the team's adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
4. Reporting and Analysis (10%):
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of engagement activities, tracking key metrics and outcomes.
- Prepare regular reports and presentations on engagement initiatives to inform the Vice Provost and various stakeholders.
- Stay informed about industry trends and best practices in engagement, identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field(Required) (Master's degree preferred).
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in arts engagement, community outreach, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in strategy development and implementation.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to network, and to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Have/gain knowledge of the local, state, and regional arts landscape and have a passion for promoting the arts broadly in the community.
- Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for engagement events and activities.
The percentage allocations of time are approximate and may adjust to align with organizational needs and priorities.
