The Assistant Director for Programs helps to advance the Bolch Judicial Institute’s mission to study and promote rule-of-law principles and judicial independence, and to improve the administration of justice in the United States and around the world. To do so, the Assistant Director of Programs creates and leads educational programs, conferences, symposia, events, materials, and publications for judges, lawyers, and other leaders in the legal profession. This position will have a particular focus on developing international rule of law programs, educational programs for international judges, and domestic and global civic education projects. 



  • In consultation with the director and Institute staff and advisors, create and lead programs designed to provide cutting-edge educational content for judges, lawyers, and scholars. 
    • Establish goals, objectives, and procedures for new initiatives to ensure alignment with the Institute’s mission and vision.
    • Develop curricula for educational events, including classes, workshops, CLE programs, seminars, webinars, panel discussions, conferences, and symposia. 
    • Engage and support faculty, create schedules and syllabi, and collect and develop supporting materials. 
    • Manage all aspects of program development, implementation, logistics, budgeting, fundraising, grant-writing, and promotion in collaboration with Institute staff and faculty as needed.
    • Evaluate success and efficacy of programs and advise the Director on modifications, changes, and opportunities for growth.
  • Assist in strategic planning for Institute programs and in the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures across programs.
  • Assist the Institute’s Director and other staff in developing scholarship and other writings and materials, including commentary, reports, speeches, publications and multimedia programs that advance the Institute’s mission in the public, academic, and legal spheres. 
  • Work with the Judicature staff to develop articles and other content for both the U.S. print education and the international online edition. Work with scholarly contributors to edit articles and develop commentary, Q&As, and roundtables; edit articles, newsletters, and supporting materials; and assist with production of print and online editions as needed.
  • Seek and develop partnerships and opportunities with organizations and academic programs that deliver educational content and support the judiciary in the U.S. and abroad. 
  • Work with faculty, lawyers, judges, and other affiliates of the Institute and partner programs to develop and execute research initiatives, reports, scholarly publications, and other projects. 
  • Collaborate with staff of the Institute, Law School, and partner organizations to develop and implement events, programs, fund-raising efforts, and other projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Support and manage the day-to-day work of staff, fellows, partners, and interns as assigned. 


Minimum Qualifications

Work requires a general business background generally equivalent to Bachelor's degree in a business-related field. Master's degree or MBA preferred.


Department Education Preferences
A J.D. degree and five or more years of experience managing projects and events in a legal setting. Expertise in one or more legal or policy areas relating to the rule of law, judicial studies, international judicial administration, or international law is preferred, as is a judicial clerkship.


Work requires four years of progressive experience in program management and administration. A Master's degree in a business-related field may be substituted for two year's experience OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
